I haven't seen the previews for tonight's episode. Is this spoilery?

Eliot is annoyed?

NO!!

Really?

I'm so glad TNT decided to give us 2 more episodes before January.

Will TNT be rerunning the first season at any point?

Gregory said...

I haven't asked a question thus far, so I'll open with this one.

Is Eliot NOT being annoyed a sign of the End Times\Apocalypse\Cthulhu waking?

Hmmm... Eliot vs. Cthulhu...

David Hunt said...

"Hmmm... Eliot vs. Cthulhu..."

Neat thought, but I don't think that Eliot would stand a chance if he wasn't annoyed. Since, Eliot not being annoyed is a prerequisite...

At least Eliot would have the consolation of being eaten first.

Sorry for my horrible HTML anti-skills.

Hardison's grifting, should be interesting.

And yay, I love grumpy Eliot.

*sigh* My kingdom for an editor …

@David Hunt: Yes, but don't you think that the prospect of being eaten would so annoy Eliot that it would then become an even match?

You have been asked a lot about ratings. If I watch the episodes LIVE, record on the DVR (OMG - almost said 'TAPE') and then watch it again immediately -- Do I count TWICE?

Ummm. that dress maybe better than the green one from last season. Eliot as a mute. Parker not being able to leave Sophie alone. It's almost as if Leverage never stopped airing for the summmmm... Hey!!!

Anonymous said...

Eliot is angry except when he is fighting. Then he is calm. I do enjoy some calm Eliot fighting. But I also like seeing him annoyed. Here's hoping to see both tonight.

Ann said...

Hardison - great grifting & accent. Parker working the beauty. Nate in charge. Eliot...being Eliot and mute. No one leaving Sophie alone. Its almost as if the show never went on hiatus for the summmmm... Hey!!!

Havenward said...

I really love the way you've connected Sophie to the team in this episode without requiring her there. She's very present.

My question, silly as it is... Did Chris work in the fun train comment, having picked it up from the writers? Or did y'all work that in on purpose?

Anonymous said...

Loved the episode - Parker, Hardison, and Elliot were all priceless. Elliot's consistent annoyance with Hardison was fantastic as was his pride (at least that's the way I read it) when Parker "stuck" the landing in the vault. However, Sophie and Nate continue to break my heart...make them stop that soon, ok? I was actually yelling at my screen when he hung up the phone like that at the end. Fail, Nathan, fail.

Melissa in St Louis said...

What a fun episode!

Loved
1) Using Sterling's name
2) Parker's sophisticated style. She looked AMAZING
3) The witty reparte during the 'beat down'

Questions --
1) How did the Eliot is Mute come into play. Hardison just going overboard?

2) How many takes did you have to have for 'Hugging it out' scene? I can just see them burst out laughing at that one!

3) Do the cast and crew watch together on Wed nights?

Thanks again for what you do to keep us lowly fans happy!

I love Hardison just ignoring Eliot's empty threats. The "hug it out" bit was sure cute. Entourage reference?

I love Parker being all uber-thief and safe cracking. She came off particularly badass this episode. I adore safe cracking scenes, for some reason. Also, Parker in those tight dresses with her hair back - WOW.

Is Eliot actually annoyed with Hardison, or is he annoyed with the fact that he knows he won't hit Hardison no matter how much Hardison screws up?

I really loved the little "family" moments in this episode; Parker moving around on the empty couch and irritating the others, Hardison calling Sophie-Mom for help when he's in trouble, Hardison and Eliot snapping at each other as Hardison pretends to beat him up.

Unknown said...

Classy episode. Cheers to everyone. My question is: Is Sophie waiting for Nate to ask her to come back or is she really just taking a well-needed break? Either way, I miss Gina!

Ashley said...

Wonderful job! Loved it! Flashbacks = awesomeness! Plus, all the little bickering between Hardison and Eliot, plus Eliot was wearing earrings for the first time! Yes....I do pay attention to that....

Only one question, which is actually a premonition. Since Nate used Sterling's name, won't Cassidy say something about that? Is that how Sterling finds the Leverage team? Or am I just reading too far into it?

Anonymous said...

Was that a bucky ball molecule I saw at the lab, in the monitor?

DougBot said...

Lots of great dialogue in this one. The line about insurance agents and firearms is probably going up in offices all over tomorrow.

Q: So far we've seen Sophie's storage facility of retirement and Parker's evidently held on to some of her crown jewels. Have Eliot or Hardison kept similar momentos? I suspect the latter has a deposit slip from an Icelandic savings and loan...

AntiSocialButterfly said...

Once again great episode. Either as a continuation of last episode or as a season opener this was definitely an A+.

I have to ask, did you expect to get that much mileage out of that deleted scene of Parker trying to pick up the mark in the bar? Do you have lots of those little flashbacks that have been edited for time in storage? Do you plan on pulling them out in season 3? I suspect that I am not the only one who would like to see that.

I would also like to give props to Aldis for whatever that East Ender/Australian/Jack Sparrow accent was. It was amazing in its awfulness.

However, I was a bit disappointed in one thing. When I saw Hardison pull up in the red sports car my first thought was "yay! Nate's Tesla." Not that the Ferrari wasn't awesome but it would have been cool.

I can't wait to see Jeri Ryan next week, though I am a little sad it will mean no more Leverage for awhile. Again, wonderful job.

Melissa in St Louis said...

Can someone help - what did Eliot say to Hardison right after Hardison and Parker busted through the floor? I couldn't make it out.

rcampuzano said...

Another excellent episode. I have been following the show since episode 1 and your blog since I found out about it.I have a question, two actually. Would you add bloopers to the season 2 dvds? and does DVR watching (within 3 days) count if I'm not a Nielsen family?
Thanks.

Rayhne said...

This antagonism between Nate and Sterling ... are we going to hear the story behind that? There's got to be more to it then rivalry at work, especially since they were once the best of friends. So what happened?

Codger said...

Since I had two questions earlier, I'll refrain now. Just wanted to say your casting crew seriously need bonuses. Besides our main five and other guests we've seen, I was reminded of that again with the state police lieutenant's return tonight. Both he and the other state police lieutenant from "The Snow Job" (Greg Collins) manage to sell that they're really very intelligent and competent cops in just a few lines. And Robert Blanche is just so darn charming while doing it.

Plus with all the high-tech sheanigans they get up to usually, loved Parker just holding a picture of an armored car in front of the security camera. Hee!

Are you guys happy your finally got to use Parker's "Wink & Shimmy" scene?

Cindy said...

Fanfreakingtastic! Seriously. Eliot's wardrobe was awesome . . . giving props to his Native Heritage.

My question? Sophie has clothes in Nate's closet? Hmmmmm . . . .

Kimmie said...

Sort of a superficial question, compared to some of the really insightful ones that get asked here, but:

The watch and jewelry that Chris wears, is that his stuff or is it just costuming for Eliot? If it's his, does it have any significance to him, or is it just his favorite stuff?

There hasn't been one episode so far that I won't/haven't watched multiple times. Thank heavens for DVR. Keep knocking it out of the park!

Melissa in St Louis said...

I, like Kim, have thought about Eliot's wardrobe. Most of the non-con clothing seems like it came straight from Chris' own closet!

OhShinyTomato said...

Alright, I'm TRYING to get my brain past anything outside of Parker in that dress, but it's hard. Which actually I do have a question about that. Not the dress, but her hair. By any chance do you know what kind of extensions were used? The brand, length, human/synthetic? You're a guy so I doubt it, but I thought I'd ask. Aha.

Anyway, I LOVED that you got to use the wink and shimmy scene finally, that was put in there perfectly. And I also loved Parker's break in scene, the girls got serious skills and it'd be awesome if we could see more of that.

And Nate is so dumb, everyone else makes it clear to Sophie that THEY need her... except him. He'll just never get it, will he? -sigh-

AND GOD. YOU EVIL PEOPLE WITH THE PARKER/HARDISON ALMOST-MOMENT. Jeez. You just keep giving us teasers. Its wrong lol

Anonymous said...

I love the concept of Sophie having "Emergency Jimmy Chu's"

Also, I was vastly amused at Parker's call to Sophie and i said to the housemate, "You know, i bet before the episode is over everyone ends up calling her at least once.

Sophie is STILL breaking my heart. I thought i asked you to do something about that.

Similar the the Canada question in a previous post, is there any chance of Leverage being aired and/or getting a DVD release in the UK? I feel bad for getting it from the internet, but I see no other way.

Unknown said...

Eliot's use of "fun train" is a decent segue into a question I was going to ask anyway: How much influence, if any, does the conversation here have on the show? For instance, do the questions that come up here give insight (that you wouldn't get from other sources) into what worked and what didn't?

Also, fanboys the world over thank you for putting Beth in that dress.

alikitty619 said...

I love the Eliot/Hardison interaction. It keeps getting better. And Parker was AWESOME!

Question- Does Beth like the dress up stuff or is she happier w/ Parker's regular wardrobe.

Cause I have say, Beth ROCKED that dress.

OK, this one's bugging me.

If the alarms were triggered by the seismic sensor going off when the explosive punched through the floor of the box where Parker and Hardison were hiding, how does Parker have time to get back out of the box, pick the lock, and get down so that Eliot thinks they came down together?

Or is Hardison just that lucky?

CindyD said...

Who opened the box with the diamonds in it and how/when?

Why did the idiot Russian thug bring it to the attention of the cop?

Why did Sophie drop the phone in her drink? There are various reasons, I guess, but I just wasn't clear about that.

SueN. said...

I loved this ep! Parker is seriously scary as a thief (talk about your competence porn!), Hardison is seriously scary as a grifter (incompetence porn?), Eliot remains just seriously scary (though clearly not so to Hardison), and Nate is seriously hopeless. (Dude, just TELL the woman you miss her!)

What I loved most, though, was the idea that these incredibly competent people, all of whom once were dedicated loners, have now become such a family that they're lost without Sophie. You could almost hear "the kids" asking Nate, "When's Mom coming home?"

Seriously, someone slap Nate. And hug the kids. Though maybe not Eliot …

Anonymous said...

@Melissa in St Louis: "what did Eliot say to Hardison right after Hardison and Parker busted through the floor?"

"Det cord." He was explaining how he blew the hole, which was the same method that the head mook talked about using to get in.

MelodyAnne88 said...

truly awesome episode. Kudos to everyone! I think Christian is the only person I have ever seen who was able to pull of wearing aviators. Also the Competence porn... BRILLIANT. The bits between Hardison and Eliot (the fake fighting and the hug bit at the end) had me laughing out loud.
How much fun did Aldis have with the accent? Seemed like he enjoyed it a lot. Also, right before Parker and Hardison fell through the vault floor... the look between them.. it was easy to tell how Hardison felt but was parker feelin it too? Or was she still annoyed at him for taking credit for all her work? I couldn't tell.

Cat said...

Was the accent an acting choice on Aldis' part or was it scripted?

So, how many times has Hardison seen "Snatch" and does he really think he's Vinnie Jones?

Somehow I can't buy Eliot whining to Sophie over the phone...

Otherwise - a fantastic episode! The "hug it out" bit was just priceless, the wink and shimmy scene got due attention and finally Parker had the opportunity to show off her true genius. Great!

I also liked the final conversation where Nate pretty much tells Sophie she needs to be all the way in or all the way out, but not in between like she had been in this ep. Both actors played it our real well.

Save-vs-DM said...

Wonderful episode indeed, it was just fantastic seeing how the gang worked without a key player front and center (though Sophie still made her presence felt).

I had a giggle when I noticed that the armored car robbery at the beginning took place right on Naito Parkway. I happen to know that there are several train tracks quite near there. Did you guys have problems filming around the train noise (not to mention the Portland weather)?

Darkrose said...

I know, I'm weird, but I thought that while Parker was hot in the dress, she was *smoking* in her work clothes, hanging off the door.

Questions:

1. Was Hardison really saying "I'm sorry I've been kind of a dick?" to Parker there at the end of the job, and did she get it?

2. Will we ever find out what Sophie was doing while she was gone?

3. Aldis mentioned at the Vancouver SPN con that he'd like to have Zoe Saldana as a better, rival hacker for a love interest. Can you make that happen plskthx?

Anonymous said...

I love the way we see the softer side of Eliot at times and let me just say...he was rocking the vest and beads in his hair. Whew....MORE ELIOT....

Rayhne said...

A second question, part of the first. Nate doing Sterling ... Is that how Sterling really is or is that how Nate sees him (or wants to see him.)?

Improper Bostonian said...

Just an odd question. Have any of them actually been arrested?

Thanks for the skyline shots.

Shiruke said...

Fantastic episode!

@Cindy: Considering that Nate's apartment is the team's HQ, it makes sense that Sophie has clothes in Nate's closet. For cons. ;-)

Patrick said...

I'm sure I'm not the first one to comment on this, but how did the safety box open itself? I was sure to see a clip of Sophie walking in with the police to open it, but there was no such clip. So how did the escape explosion open just the box with the diamonds in them?

Melissa in St Louis said...

bluehex said...

I didnt see him as whining as much as I did just venting... because the family was making him crazy.

...or am I the only one who finds the need to do that?

Alexandra said...

Yay stealing things! This ep was exactly the kind of thing I wanted to see this week.

There were so many great moments, but I particularly loved that Sophie seems to just be wearing coats in various pubs whenever someone calls her.

Question: what episode is the wink and shimmy scene from? I've seen many commenters mention it so I'm assuming it's a deleted scene from somewhere, but I can't place it.

Unknown said...

major sexyness thing going on there with the dress on Parker, wholy thingy!

so .. I'm supposed to believe that a red laser running CW is really a pulsed UV laser? seriously? Come on man, you're a fellow PHYSICIST! show some physicist love, man!

Anonymous said...

Great episode. Very fun. But pahleese! Did anyone buy Hardisons accent? Still, i think that made it enjoyable, which i assume is what you were going for.

You need to have Parker and Eliot working together more, they're a great team. Focused, driven, he has the power while she has the precision. Sorry, i just love it when those two team up for a con/heist.

No questions yet (i'm going to assume that Hardison picked the vault lock since the team have been cross training) but i might be back after a second viewing.

Nato said...

I notice that thus far this season, Parker and Hardison's most honest, intimate moments have come when they're in bank vaults (and when Hardison is wearing a costume and using an English accent, oddly enough). Given Parker's almost sexual attraction to money, is this deliberate? Does the presence of all that loot make her feel secure enough to let down her guard even a little bit?

Cindy said...

I'm back. I've no watched this episode 3 times and can watch it again and again and again. Though last weeks episode was fantastic, this one just had a great, classic, Leverage feel. I loved it.

My question is did Nate "learn" the trick of using Sterling's name from last week's con when his name was used? Cause I loved it.

I can't swoon enough over Chris in this episode. Seriously.

Tequila Kaniac said...

managed to watch the ep..and laughed quite a bit...what im wondering is..i notice that Christian is waering his Cherokee braids and beads...is there gonna be a bit of back story on Elliot to explain thischoice of hair decoration?

What, no Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends reference to go with "Iceman?"

And I pray those were Arsenal and not Man U fans there in the background.

Liz said...

Hah, loved Parker breaking in...so that Hardison could break in. Very clever. And oh my, Hardison's accent was equal parts great and awful. "Savvy." Hah! Hardison and Parker (and their actors) really shone in this episode.

I'm glad we're still getting to see Sophie. Funny how her absence really drives home her importance as the one who holds the team together. Makes me wonder what we (and they) are in for the rest of the season.

briddie said...

I realize now that I can live without the personal background if we can have the professional background. Parker's resume is very impressive!

I expected Hardison to really hit Eliot in the jewelry store, then say 'oops', just to be ornery.

My only question, which you probably can't answer yet, is if using Sterling's name is going to come back to bite Nate. "Speak of the devil" and all that.

D' Lan 88 said...

again, great ep! i love the sceneries..portland really is beautiful. and sophie is like a mommy they ran to..sweet. i got one question though:

in parker's flashback, i don't remember seeing her in that bar with that dress..i mean the scene before she stabbed the guy.. when was that? did i missed anything?

Anonymous said...

Loved the episode - I too have to watch on the net because I can't get it in the UK. Just one question (apologies for my ignorance) what's the hoo-haa about "the fun train"? I don't get it.

Anonymous said...

Okay, now i have a question. Why on earth did Nate pick Hardison to be the grifter?

I know it's kind of necessary for the plot but Nate is supposed 'to know what all of them can do' which gives him his 'edge'. He had no choice but to give Parker the girlfriend role as she's the only women left but both Nate and Eliot are better grifters than Hardison. Hardison should have been the insurance guy instead.

Does not compute.

Oh, and to all those wondering about Parkers flashback, it's on you tube.

My whole family was yelling at Nate during his phone conversation. My son asked why he was acting like such a douche (I'm paraphrasing here). I said Nate's addicted to control, and he can't control Sophie *or* his feelings for her. Am I even warm?

I live in Canada and I've still never seen an episode of this show. I just ordered the DVDs, so that's fine... but I had to order them from amazon.ca, the fourth place I looked. Chapters/Indigo doesn't have them listed. Future Shop doesn't have them listed. Zip.ca doesn't have them listed.

It should be a lot easier to get somebody to take my money.

I was just curious, when you were plotting out each character in the beginning how far into detail did you go? Like to the extreme of what each person's birthday is and place of birth? Or was it more of a general outline?

I only ask cause what do you get a person for their birthday when they can just steal whatever they want.

Catchester: “Okay, now i have a question. Why on earth did Nate pick Hardison to be the grifter?”

I’m going to take a layman’s guess at this. It would been tactically better for Nate to take the grifter’s role, but Nate has sort of pigeon-holed himself into the whole mastermind schtick. He sees it as a given that he’s going to be out of sight running things. After that role is given, Nate had very few choices for who he would assign to each role. Hardison couldn’t be Muscle as Eliot really was acting as his bodyguard and “Iceman” needed a real bodyguard. The cat would have come out of the bag if Hardison had been Muscle in that pool-hall fight. Given the Mark’s personality, Parker had to be the Roper. Plus, seeing her in that dress was worth it even if it meant that Hardison had to die. We’ve got to keep our priorities strait! That leaves Hardison as the only one left to be the Grifter. The sad thing is that he could have pulled it off easily if he had gone in taking the job seriously instead of thinking of it as a fun vacation from sitting in the Van. Hardison needs to eat some major crow after he derided Sophie for taking all the work that he does for granted. That street should go two ways.

Sidenote about Nate assigning himself the background Mastermind role: It even makes sense in a lot of ways. If he’s in the middle of it surrounded by Marks, he can’t give hints/suggestions/info/orders to the rest of the Team. From the background he can prompt them with info and suggest/order them in various ways to keep the con moving. Finally, it gives him the option of stepping in as whatever character is needed to pull anyone’s *cough* Hardison *cough* fat out the fire.

That’s all rationalization, though. Nate is controlling from the background because Nate’s a control freak. Plus I sometimes wonder if Nate trying to keep his face out of things as much as possible because he doesn’t want to be remember as a thief even by the Marks. Afterall, he’s still an Honest Man. The rest of the team are Thieves!

USRaider said...

Although the early part of Season Two has been great, with the last two episodes the show has been really hitting a great stride. Perhaps the strife of Sophie being gone (#208 really showed she's the glue that holds the team together) and the continued painful emotions between Nate and Sophie have only allowed the show to really take off.

It was fun watching Eliot and Hardison at the end with the "hug it out" scene. I can imagine the Christian was trying hard not to break up (there was even a smile before he got back into character and said, "I'll break your arm."

The real star of this ep, however, was Parker (Beth). She showed so many facets (no pun intended) of how her character has expanded since the first episode. From the grift to the actual B&E to the use of the wax pencil to leave the combo on the door (NICE TOUCH!), it was a real star turn.

No real questions, just kudos for another outstanding episode of what has become one of the best shows on television, forget just cable. And I certainly hope it was ManU fans behind Sophie rather than Arsenal.

David Hunt said...

I watched in fascinated horror as Hardison walked back his relationship with virtually every member of the team by months (at least). It had the train-wreck feeling of something that’s horrible but you can’t bring yourself to look away. Nate now doesn’t know if he can trust Hardison outside of the Van. Eliot is ferociously annoyed at him and I wouldn’t have been the least bit surprised to hear him say “I didn’t rescue you from that vault. I rescued Parker. You just happened to be standing next to her.” And on the subject of Parker, in addition to getting himself into a position where she had to bail him out, he takes credit for her jobs. Ones that she was proud enough to brag about. Forget dating her; he’ll be lucky if she lets him sit next to her on the couch next week.

My question: I am I right thinking that Hardison is beginning to take his and the Team’s invulnerability for granted? I remember in watching him “run” surveillance on the food company in the Top Hat Job sitting around balancing that ball on his head instead of paying attention. Now he gives the Team this mess. And if he learned anything at all from this particular goatf**k, he’s hiding it real well.

hmmm interesting notes there ..

Love you guys and Love Hardison but tell Aldis NEVER EVER to do a London Accent ever again.

Ever. My ears are still burning. Hell, I grew up in South London.

Please tell me Mark Sheppard was around to take the ever lasting piss out of Aldis, please?

@David Hunt - Nate often takes on a role in the con so it wouldnt be unusual for him to take the main role.

Eliot started that fight himself and if he'd been the grifter he wouldnt have needed muscle. After all, Parker is a "real" diamond thief and she doesn't have a bodyguard.

It's just illogical.

I'm off to download this and watch it again.

But I have come to the conclusion that when I'm watching this show, the incredibly long commercial breaks really wreck the continuity (probably because they are so long, I'm off doing other chores).

This is definitely a show to savor in DVDs. Don't know why.

Loved, loved, LOVED the show this week, this had all my favourite elements up front and centre. Parker competence porn is my favourite type and this showcased her talents perfectly.

Aldis Hodge gave Dick Van Dyke a run for his money for "Worst Cockney Accent Ever" but I'm assuming that was deliberate, to show that grifter is not his real forte. Loved that Sophie called him on it :)

Talking of Sophie, I really adored the scene with Parker hiding and calling her for help. I love how the relationship between those two has developed to the point where Parker trusts Sophie enough to do that. Notable that no-one trusts Nate in quite the same way. Anyway, thank you for that scene, it was wonderful.

Anonymous - re: fun train: it's what Rogers says whenever we ask awkward nit-picking questions that really can't be answered. Just get on the fun train and enjoy the ride :)

Loved this episode, terrible accent and all, but please, please tell me that's it for the absolutely soul-crushing endings for a while? That was worse than last week.

What was Sophie drinking? I think I need one.

Anonymous said...

Agreed w/Micheal above. Hardison only pushed things too far - and I mean, gee, someone who's not used to taking the lead in a con pushing things too far? Who would think that could happen? Plus, everything he did wrong fit with the personality quirks he's shown all along - it's just that those quirks don't generally cause things to go down in flames quite so dramatically in his usual roles.

I'm surprised that everyone is so harsh on Nate, here. Yeah, what Nate said was stupid, since it was obviously not what Sophie wanted. But it was what Sophie said she wanted, so I think it was pretty unfair of her to get so pissed. (Although I do wonder exactly how someone like Nate, who spends a lot of time reading people, could go so wrong, here.)

Denita said...

Loved the episode this week but I do have to agree with w/Micheal. Hardison was a little out-of-control and I'm not sure why. I think he could have done a good job if he'd taken it seriously.

Loved everything Parker this episode and the hug it out scene was priceless-just that one scene alone made an awful week a little bit better.

Thank you.

Great episode!
The team is getting on to Hardison for over doing it.
Elliot and Hardison's fake fight was great.
Everyone calling Sophia - but her being in England wasn't quite explained well enough for me.

But this was Parker's episode! And she knocked it out of the park. I loved the look she gave Hardison as he took credit for all of her jobs. Oh and then there it the dress.

Michelle said...

Awesome ep as usual. One other person asked my burning question, so I will assume the answer is up above, but I have to ask -

Eliot with beads in his hair... really now.. why ... why - I could see them in 3 scenes- only one scene really prominently.

My second question is -

It looked like as the ep progressed Eliot seemed to be nicer to Parker. He seemed to diss her less and defend her more. It that the overall plan? Out of all of them Eliot seems the slowest to just accept the team as one big dysfunctional family and this week he seemed less annoyed by Parker- and almost seemed to defend her when Hardison was taking all the credit.

Great way to make Sophie and her importance to the team so highlighted with such a light touch. It really brought such a nice tone to the whole ep. I wish Gina well with her baby, but I really am looking forward to her being back fully and ready for the next grift.

Thanks to you and the entire cast and crew for another wonderful episode.

One last aside- when are you all planning to start filming 3.. (yeah I know 2 is barely finished).

Anonymous said...

Why exactly was Eliot wearing crazy indie-kid outfits for his role as a mute bodyguard? I thought they looked great on him, don't get me wrong, but I don't see why Eliot would go all fashion-showy (hair beads and earrings?) when he's playing a bodyguard. Unless he was dressing to fit Hardison's craziness?

Oh, and whoever said it earlier, I second that Parker was SO hot hanging on the bank vault. Pretty much the entire scene with her in the vault, really. I'd go lesbian for that.

Is Nate going to get some kind of comeuppance for repeated undervaluing Eliot? I remember in The 6th Juror Job, Nate asks if anyone else on the team plays chess, and when Eliot says he does, Nate gives him this dubious look and says, "Of course you do," in one of the most patronizing tones I've ever heard him use. And there's the "Did you think all I could do was bust heads?" "No . . . well, yeah," exchange in The Wedding Job. Then, in this episode, it seems like Eliot's trying to get himself placed in the grifter role in the beginning, and Nate shoots him down in favor of Hardison, who then sucks . . . Just seems like there might be some tension/resentment building up there, at least on Eliot's side.

@woodburner, I'm with you on the Nate bashing. He did what Sophie asked, and at least he talked to her instead of ignoring her completely. She did ask for space, and she knows he still has demons to deal with. I think it was an excellent ending!

Will TNT re-air these last two again as a lead-in to the January set? It would make sense and be a nice refresher for the second half arcs.

@ Denita - "Hardison was a little out-of-control and I'm not sure why. I think he could have done a good job if he'd taken it seriously."

Actually, it made a lot of sense for him to do this because it was his first time to really do a full on job of role playing. The first time I got a chance to do any kind of RPG, I created a heavy hitter with stats up the wazoo ready to take on the world! Needless to say, I got stomped right quick. Here, Hardison has his first chance to not be the nerd or the foreigner (Jamaican, Arab, African) and try to be a bad-ass, so of course he's going to be the biggest, the baddest... and the most stomped. I'n'it? [Or however the heck that's spelled!]

I LOVED this ep.! Eliot with his braid's and bead's,..YUM :)
Let's just start there !!!

I know that I have ax'd before, but,..
y'all have mentioned, still nothin on it however,
Christian (Eliot) Kane singing,.. WHEN ? s3 hopefully ? Anything ?

Again, y'all ROCKED IT this go around,.. loved that they "ALL" called Sophie !

SueN. said...

re: the Nate bashing and such. I know way up there somewhere I suggested someone smack Nate, but, really, his inability to say what Sophie obviously wanted to hear was completely in character. For all his brilliance, Nate is every bit as emotionally crippled as the rest of his team, and he clearly isn't good at the relationship thing. (Maggie, anyone?) And Sophie knows this (or she should). Both of them have "stuff" they have to learn to deal with, and it's not gonna happen over night. Saying to someone, "I miss you, I need you, please come home" is a *serious* surrender of control, and Nate just is not there yet.

And as for Nate putting Hardison on the grift, I can see that too. They're a team that's short a person, and obviously off-balance. They're going to have to learn to cover the gap that Sophie's absence leaves, and that means a lot of shifting in the backfield (so to speak). They've already done some cross-training (I mean, y'know, *Eliot* at a *computer*), and Nate's probably anticipating more of that in the future. Now more than ever, he really needs to know who can do what, and exactly how many members of the team can pull off an effective grift. At least now he knows who can't. ;-)

talea said...

Why isn't this ep up yet on Amazon?

Unknown said...

So, the tall skinny black guy with the British accent (even if it was intentionally horrendous) gave me serious flashbacks to Mickey Bricks in Hustle. The color scheme in the pool hall was a lot like the one in the bar in Hustle, too-- intentional shout-out to an influential show, or accident?

SueN. said...

And now I have an actual question of the vehicular nature. The pickup that Eliot and Parker leave in while Hardison is having a moment with his Ferrari … Kane's or a prop?

I have to say, it's a perfect truck for Eliot. Pre-computer chip, so it can't be hacked. (And how much must Hardison hate that?)

Thomas D said...

Aldis' accent was great. As my British friend would say, "What is that accent? Mockney?"

Unknown said...

@Matthew E - I had the same problem, had to order my copies of the DVDs through the American side of Amazon, not even amazon.ca.

Props to Aldis for giving the accent the best effort there, only way to learn them is to try them and keep working at them *grin* Not that I'd do much better lol

Lynsy said...

This s kind of random, but which world currency is Parker's favorite? The various notes all look, smell and feel different so which does she like the most?

Calla said...

Great episode. I think this worked better immediately following 207, rather than 4 months from now as the first Winter ep. The team acted like she'd been gone long enough for them to miss her, but not long enough for them to have gotten used to being without her.

And everyone's phone calls to Sophie made TOTAL sense, except Eliots. "How? I'm back up. They can't rely on me." I think he's talking about his role in the con, rather than on the team. But, I really wish I knew what Sophie's end of the conversation was, because I definitely think I'm missing why Eliot felt the need to call her.

Oh, and NICE alias for Nate - Sterling. That was really brilliant!

Sammie323 said...

For those criticizing Nate for casting Hardison as the diamond thief, what would he have done different even if Sophie had been there? Just curious.

I can buy Hardison as the thief more than Sophie. Would the mark have believed Sophie had a laser to erase the number on the diamonds?

If Sophie had been there, would she have been the rope AND the grifter, Eliot would have been her bodyguard, and Hardison and Parker would...wait in the truck?

On a different note, thanks so much to the makeup people for not flat-ironing Eliot's hair in this episode. He was working the hair and shades :)

Just a general question - how much of the actors' wardrobe, jewelry, vehicles, etc are used in the show? I know Gina mentioned her Jeep showing up in Mile High, and Dean's Tesla in the opener, what else is personal and not prop?

Topher said...

I may have heard incorrectly, but I heard that you actually have Dungeons & Dragons character sheets of the main characters. As a long-time D&D player, I must see these. Is there any chance you could scan them? Or have scans of them for the second season's DVD? Or something. Feel free to redact any and all information about storylines and background information, but I am very curious as to their stats/level/skills.

Anonymous said...

This is a somewhat off-topic question, but I've noticed a reference in an earlier answer to "CON" and "DEX" and Hardison has a strange addiction to Orange Crush. Are you intending to be a massive D&D geek- or am I just the geek reading too much into your comments?

Rather than Pretty!Parker, I believe Nate/Haridison/Eliot would have functioned as the rope if Sophie were there, trying to sell diamonds that it comes up Sophie has lasered clean, or something to that effect.

I think Sophie would have made a great diamond fencer. Because that's really where Hardison went wrong; his character was just supposed to be able to erase the numbers from diamonds and then sell them. Saying he was an actual thief was unnecessary.

Anonymous said...

There have been lots of comments about the accent. I've only been able to watch the episode once so I can't be sure, but it seemed to me that Hardison was trying for a South African accent, not a British one. Am I completely off base?

Anonymous said...

Ack! I really wanted to see this episode, and then my itunes downloaded it without the sound track.

So now I really want to see and HEAR the episode. The intro looks really pretty.

1) Please tell @Sarah from Canada from the last question thread, THEY CAN'T HAVE YOU! We Portlanders have become quite fond of you, Vancouver BC has poached to many TV shows and movies from us and we hippies and hipsters of Portland will fight to keep you here. *Strikes a menacing Eliot pose* *....smokes a bowl first*

2) You: "Reading too much into it, but nice reference. BTW, has it occurred to anyone that Captain Jack just doesn't much like children?"

I don't know, ask his grandson...OOPS!

3) How did the safety deposit box get opened? We see the thugs get distracted, Parker snags Hardison and pulls him into the room, pulls the det cord and they drop as the magic security fog goes off. When it clears, the box is then open.

4) I LOVED reading about where you got the heist idea from (http://www.wired.com/politics/law/magazine/17-04/ff_diamonds) is there a chance of finding out what other real life stories spawned some of your ideas?

5) Final comment, my boyfriend and I decided you need to bring back the Hebrew woman that had that awesome mental fight with Eliot. Please have them brawl again only this time naked or as near to naked as possible. I feel safe to say this will please everyone in some fashion. tia

I think this might be my fave episode of the season. It was interesting seeing the character dynamics pulled slightly askew with Sophie's absence. Just goes to show how much they really do rely on one another as a team at this point. Loved how insufferable Hardison was throughout, and while Parker glams up extremely well (impressively so), somehow she's much hotter hanging off a rooftop, giving that wonderful elfin "oh, I'm loving this" smile.

Also, Nate having trouble with Hardison's computer was precious. It's like dad having trouble setting the VCR, only in this case dad has to get the VCR set or else Timmy's going to get a bullet thru his head courtesy of the Russian mob. Nice one, putting the central cog in your infrastructure in the most exposed position of the con ... (Yes, I know, it DID make the most sense in terms of utilizing the available resources, but it's still a less than ideal situation.)

But after all that fun and hijinks, to end with Nate's stammering phone call to Sophie ... oh, that hurt. That hurt so bad. SAY THE WORDS, MAN. SAY THEM. IT IS NOT HARD. That really sealed the deal for me. I'm a sucker for a bummer ending like that. I love the emotional roller coaster.

Or, to boil it all down to two simple words, well played.

Anonymous said...

Was Parker sexually abused during her time in foster care? It's obvious someone (more multiple someones) messed her up pretty bad, but is Parker's heightened discomfort with men who are interested in her a result of that, or is it just innate in her personality?

I hope that made sense. >_>

I think it's really annoying that there's such a witty, charming and character-rich show on television now - "Leverage" has ruined my argument that tv is dreck!
*grins*

"The Ice Man Job" was as usual, fantastic, but my comment is on how interesting all the *other* comments in this forum. I loved reading @catchester 's link to the "Wink and shimmy" scene, @ChelseaNH pointing out the coincidence of "He's a mute" to "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels", anonymous 's Antwerp link and more.

I also really enjoy people pointing out little gems of the episodes that I missed first time around - it makes it that much more enjoyable to watch the 2nd time!

I can't believe that there are only 2 shows left until the hiatus...that's wrong, man, that's just *wrong*....

briddie said...

@Anna, it's worse than wrong. There's only one more episode and then it's over for months. The good news is Rogers and the gang can sleep and not die of exhaustion, which would prevent us from having new episodes. Ever.

re: an anonymous comment above - "Nate asks if anyone else on the team plays chess, and when Eliot says he does, Nate gives him this dubious look and says, "Of course you do," in one of the most patronizing tones I've ever heard him use."

I'm pretty sure the "of course you do" comment was Nate's exasperation that Eliot's skill set seems to include every random thing one could possibly think of, rather than Nate being dubious of Eliot's ability to play chess.

Anonymous said...

Ah, that gives me a whole new take on that exchange. I always took it as a "sit down and shut up" kind of moment. My cynicism, I guess. Thanks.

Melissa in St Louis said...

This may have been discussed previously - but I have been rewatching season 1 and then again after this week I am seeing a recurring theme for Eliot...

'Next time *I* get to....' whatever. I think this is at least the third time we have heard that.

'Next time I get to wear the tux...'
'Next time I get to play the thief...'

and I was pretty sure there was at least one more.

@Anonymous (8:45 pm) -- yeah, I agree; even if the accent was intended to be British it sounded fairly South African to me. That's just based on my friend from Zimbabwe, but close enough.

Word verification -- stand. I don't like standing up. I'm lazy.

Great episode!

I kind of expected the twist to involve that federal investigator . . . like he'd be in on the robbery. So the real twist came as a genuine surprise.

I loved the way that Sophie was worked into things in a belly-hiding way.

And HEY, ROGERS! "Royal Pains" is good stuff. Maybe there's some sort of sore feelings or legality that keeps you from discussing it here, but for what it's worth, I'm liking it.

'straptio': Medieval torture device, or possibly sex toy.

Lynsy said...

I have a couple of questions. 1)Did the title of the ep have anything to do with the fact that Timothy Hutton was in a movie called The Ice Man? cause it made me giggle regardless. 2)if Parker hadn't had time to pick the lock box door, and Hardison hadn't picked the lock by the time the bad guys got trapped, then why was the lock box door hanging open when the Cop walked over to it? 3) Parker's hair seemed much longer when it was in the ponytail, was she wearing extensions?

CaillieMac said...

On the next DVD, can all the deleted scenes mentioned in the commentary be on the disc? 'Cause I think there weren't as many as the 'discusees' said there would be for Season 1, and I was really disappointed to miss them.

CindyD said...

I have no question but the word verification was duckid, so how could I let that go by unused?

@Stefan Jones

it was his first time to really do a full on job of role playing.

Well, he did play an FBI agent in The Bank Shot Job, and he was almost as over the top as he was in this one. (That was more of a last-minute improvisation than a plan, though.) It's possible he's just not very good at this.

mikkee said...

Just an excellent episode!! Everyone was wonderful, and the writing couldn't have been better! But I, like so many others, especially love the banter between the "kids" -- and you supplied a good amount of it in #208, even including Sophie in the mix. The Hardison/Eliot stuff just can't be beaten. Early on, Eliot to Hardison, in all seriousness but with complete calm and full eye contact: "Not.Gonna.Help." Cracked me up! And I was rolling during the "man hug" scene!! It looked like it included a bunch of improv on Aldis's part. I pray that you include outtakes of that scene in the S2 DVD release. I have already watched it dozens of times since it aired! A huge thank you to everyone on the Leverage team for the consistently spectacular enjoyment you provide to us!

Eric K said...

OK, not a question specific to this episode, but as a Portlander I gitt ask when will we get to play ourselves rather than being Boston or even frikkin Nebraska?

Courtney said...

This isn't an episode question, more a general question. I apologize if this has been asked and answered before.

How long does it take to create an episode? I'm talking from coming up with the idea for the episode to the finished product.

How long does that generally take?

Improper Bostonian said...
