LEVERAGE 2: Welcome to Portland

Out along the river, two geese watch disapprovingly as we beat the hell out of Nate Ford in an abandoned factory.

First day of shooting in Portland. The city and crew are a dream. Seriously, there's a low-key vibe among the crew here -- no high drama, none of the nervous energy on most crews. The weather, on the other hand ... well, we have a saying in the writers' room: "Rain is cheap night." We got all that and more:

Rain to blinding sun to hail all within 45 minutes. Welcome to Portland. Although early hail impressed up on us God's personal grudge against our 1st AD, the weather inconvenienced us not a jot, and we move on --

What happened today? Sophie spoke with a sexy Cockney accent and decided if Nate Ford wound up in Boston Harbor or not. Nate Ford got beaten up by a guy who knew his dad. Parker got used to the earbuds again while seriously rocking the chick-in-a-suit-look, and Hardison yelled "If you want to live, get in!" while bullets sparked around him.

And, of course, Eliot Spencer indulged in his usual hobbies -- in this case at half speed, to break in new stunt-buddies.

Any unresolved questions from Season 1 in the Comments, I'll take a shot at them. For what it's worth, TNT has a Twitter feed, the show should soon have one, and we may well do a writers' room feed under the writers room tag or my name -- still deciding. But we're going to be much more aggressive this year about getting you the resources you need to have whatever conversation you're having on your site about the show.

PS: Fine, I'll bite. jonrog1 is the twitter channel, for my indulgences at least.

Yeah...rain. You're going to have that.
By the way, an old college buddy of mine got a job on the show so thanks for throwing him some employment!

BuzzGirl said...

Hah! I was just thinking about that this afternoon, wondering if you guys were out shooting during the hail. Really, a perfect introduction to Portland weather. :)

Rick said...

Dammit, Rogers, you're going to actually make me commit to Twitter? I've been trying to avoid the whole "Stay up to date on all your friends lunch plans!" thing, and here you go and tease me with the possibility of Leverage news via Twitter.

Damn you.

Figure you've already been told about Powell's by a lot of people, so my Portland recommendation would be for Jake's Famous Crawfish, in particular their chocolate purse dessert, which as I recall was a box made of chocolate, filled with chocolate mousse and another chocolate or two element I'm blanking on. However, it has been a few years since I was last in Portland, and I don't know if it's still on their menu, or whether Jake's being bought by McCormick and Schmick's has changed the place overmuch.

Oh, and according to a Portland friend, Voodoo Donuts is the way to start your day. After the Bushmill's, of course.

Give me some info about Season 1 DVD! Can't wait!

Nah, if I have any unanswered questions, I'm happy to to wait for season 2 and see what happens. Besides, I can't think of any right now!

Aw, I just love that old trope where the bad guys wait their turn to attack the good guy, instead of just rushing him.... it's a classic...

Aw, I just love that old trope where the bad guys wait their turn to attack the good guy, instead of just rushing him.... it's a classic...It'll be simultaneous when we run it -- our new stunt coordinator actually lays it out like that, and it's interesting. vs. each, then vs. all at half speed but staggered, then moving it faster and faster until it's up at near full-speed. I hadn;t seen that technique, but it seems to make the choreography move along a little faster.

How can I put this politely? I am so fucking excited for the second season!

Yay Bahston! Ew Boston Harbor. I guess it beats swimming in the Charles. Now, that's a dirty river.

I would also like to know what going to be in the extras on the Season 1 DVD. Specifically, my fav, the costumes and set locations!

Everything I hear about Portland makes it sound like New Orleans only colder and with more breweries (most per capita of any city in the US). Have a good shoot Rogers.

I started following someone on twitter called JONROG because I couldn't find a jonrog1. Is that you or am I now following a systems analyst?

Hi John. This is Rick Jenkins's brother Christopher. Love the show and thought of you when I read this:

Voodoo Doughnuts. Hot Lips Pizza. Zells' Cafe. Stumptown Coffee (don't worry, they're that rude to everyone). Mississipi Pizza Pub. Amnesia Brewing. Biwa. Hopworks Urban Brewing. Nostrana. Jake's Grill. Sckavone's. Slow Bar.

That should get you through production. No need to thank me.

A question! :) I was wondering what exactly happened in Tuscany involving Nate and Sophie, there was an event Sophie referenced in The Mile High Job. Nate thought it happened in Paris.

Denita said...

Rain and hail! What an introduction to the weather in the Portland area. Well, at least it's better than the possibility of an earthquake on any given day. :)

I actually do have a question about season one-or rather, a question about a character. It's established that these people are thieves. Parker's an expert cat burgler, Sophie's an expert con artist, Hardison is an expert at high-technology and the coolest geek ever. Eliot has this awesome talent at detecting weapons and beating the crap out of people..but what kind of thief was he? What exactly does a "retrieval specialest" do? Did people hire him to outright steal things for them? Or did they hire him to retrieve property that had been stolen from them? I was wondering because...isn't that basically what Nathan did for the insurance company?

My word verification read, "flysm," so I guess this comment is in some way blessed by the Deity.

That said, welcome to Portland. If the crew is really nice, get them lunch from Bunk. I'll second the Biwa rec, especially if you've got a thing for grilled chicken hearts, pork belly, and shochu.

Balls to twitter, though. I gots bills to pay.

Best of luck.

Denita said...

Also, it's very apparent that I cannot spell this morning.

briddie said...

Sophie does Cockney, eh? She looks too posh to pull that one off. The whole scene sounds like it's going to be a DVR moment.

CindyD said...

"Parker got used to the earbuds again...." Perhaps she should ask Spencer about new ways to use them, as that was one of my unresolved questions from Season 1. In “The First David Job“, how could Spencer converse with Nate on Parker’s bone conduction earpiece by holding it in front of his face? And with Alex Carter on Hardison’s earbud doing the same? If one could both talk and hear that way, then, inter alia, it seems like Eliot would have been able to warn Nate that they were “blown” without finding the thing and sticking it back in his ear.

Also, I should point out that here in Louisiana the weather is fine today and will have a comfortable high of 73 degrees. (Yes, already shamelessly promoting Louisiana for your season 3 location). I would love to see Sophie nail a Cajun accent!

Mary Sue said...

@Denita-- you do realise that Oregon not only has earthquakes, we have active volcanoes just over the border in Washington?

Out on the coast there's also tsunami escape routes.

Anonymous said...

If I ever thought that my love for this show was just a temporary infatuation (I didn't, but it was at least possible) that theory would have been completely shot to pieces when the very first sentence of this blog had me clapping my hands in fannish glee.

Oh, Leverage. I do love you so. Come back to me quickly!

Anonymous said...

Oh, and I do have a query regarding names:

Of course Parker only has the one, but I'm interested in finding out why the team all address each other by first name instead of last - except Hardison.

Because, given the givens, (they're all loners, kinda coerced into working together, Nate used to hunt them down, all secretive and private about their pasts and personal lives, etc) this is a group that seems to lend itself MORE towards no-first-names, if only as a deliberate method of keeping emotional distance.

Eliot in particular is one you would assume follows the macho/military last name usage. And yet, I can't recall anyone EVER addressing him as "Spencer."

Going back to the original meet when they were working for Dubinich - I don't think anyone referred to Nate by name and he called them: "Hardison" (last name), "Parker" (last name?), and "Eliot" (making his the only first name used).

My personal guesswork (I have thought about this a LOT, if you couldn't tell!) is that, just like with Sophie, Nate Ford had met Eliot Spencer before and they knew each other well enough to be on a "first name basis" of sorts ... and after the team formed/introductions were made, the others just followed Nate's lead.

Glad to hear that season 2 seems to be kicking off with a bang and I cannot wait to see what happens!

Dweeze said...

Not having any luck finding the Twitter feed. Any chance of you putting a link on the front?

Denita said...

@Mary Sue-They do? I mean, I knew that there were active volcanoes in the region but not that there were earthquakes too. Just goes to show that you can learn something new every day. (especially if you didn't pay attention in class)

I hope the tsunami escape routes are better than our hurricane escape routes and that no one has to use either this year.

Welcome to Stumptown! Going to the comic show next weekend?

Summers here are just frigging glorious. Long, bright evenings. Reasonable temps and humidity. No mosquitoes.

So, I imagine you'll be blowing up lots of things in the NW Industrial area and the east side?

Verification Vocabulary: "blollyt" . . . Half of a smithereen.

CindyD said...

Oops. I meant Parker should ask Sterling, not "Spencer", about the earbuds. Guess I left the house this morning with my Freudian slip showing ...

Kerstin said...

Great to hear that the next season is under way, though all that rain and hail seems to suck. But the best of luck with filming.

I do have one leftover season 1 question though, and since you asked...

In the 12-Step Job, there's this one scene that's been bugging me whenever I watched. During the final reveal, there is the flashback to Nate at the Taco stand talking to Hardison on the phone when Nate asks Hardison what he and Eliot did with the Chilean's bomb.
I've always wondered about the look Eliot gives Hardison upon hearing that question. They both kinda looked like kids caught with their hands in the cookie jar, just as if they had put it somewhere they shouldn't have. Although I have the feeling that not even those two would be up to no good with a bomb...right?
So, is there a missing scene somewhere, or was that just Eliot's "No way, you're not going to play around with some Chilean's bomb while I'm in the same city"-look at Hardison?

Best of luck for season 2, and I really hope that Leverage is going to be on German TV soon, too. I've hooked all my friends who speak English on it already, but I'm longing to get them all sucked into it. So I'll keep my fingers crossed for that.

Welcome to the best city on the planet. MHO, of course. We love our liquid sunshine.

I probably won't ever be able to watch you film, but I'm all excited about seeing my city with the best characters on cable running loose inside its limits. Promise me the Made In Oregon sign doesn't get blown up, though.

Oh, yeah, recommendations? You didn't ask but folks are providing so I might as well go sheep and follow along. STUMPTOWN COFFEE, MAN! They serve it a couple of places but check out N Alberta and N Mississippi for great coffee places coupled with great art. And wine bars. And...oh, just hit all of arty North Portland. (I live in St Johns and would recommend all sorts of places there, like Ladybug Coffee...but for art you have to go to the art district.)

To seriously state something that needs to be said....

Parker in a suit is made of so much sexiness it's insane.

Thumbs up. Jesus, I might have had a tiny heart attack with that.

And ugh! Twitter! I was trying to avoid that whole fad.... now you're so going to make me join it, aren't you? Damnit.

Oh, and welcome to Portland, John. If some guy accosts you randomly on the street asking you to sign his Manual of the Planes, I hope that it won't be me.

Wow, you guys were filming like one block from my Alma-Matter, PNCA! It's awesome to see you guys in Portland. And yes, the Hail is a fair introduction to our weather.

So you've been told about Powell's, Voodoo Doughnut (three words: Bacon Maple Bar), and a few other places. But there a few off the beaten path you should really check out.

The first is Things From Another World, a great comic shop. It's down on Sandy at about 42nd or so. Very clean, very nice, great selection of comics.

The second is a bar called the Tear Drop. They serve real absinth and other great, great drinks. They make their own tonic water. It's a seriously neat place to hang out (but kind of expensive).

Finally, up on NW 21st is this little Italian place called Bastas. It's a really, really good place to get whole fish and other really tasty food. Plus they have really good martinis.

Also, if you guys want a seriously creepy place to film, don't forget that Portland has actual Shanghai Tunnels (not to be confused with the bar of the same name)!

CindyD said...

Michael Bourgon said... anybody else see Hardison in this week's "Castle"?

Yes, playing a Nigerian, no less. My kid spotted him first. (Makes a Mama proud to have raised a “little” leverage fan)

(wiping away a tear) Also makes me pine to see Hardison and the gang with other Nigerians I remember…--Oh wait, I have that one on DVR! ;-)

And the finished result too, of course. I love me some Eliot-fu!

Mary Sue said...

@Trent, I have a hard and firm rule regarding comic shops (and comic shows, I'm missing the 'Fest this weekend and it's making me cranky)-- if I, as a single female, walk in and am not greeted by a staffer within 5 minutes, leeway given if the place is busy, I walk out with my cashy money. Excalibur failed this test.

Bridge City Comics in North Portland are the folks who take care of my pull list. Then I usually wander down to Por Que No for tacos, which I have helpfully called in an order for ahead of time.

Regarding Mio Sushi, in LA it would be considered mediocre sushi. Here in PDX, it's top of the line. :(

Tonya said...

Hail, hail, the gang's all here! I would sing the rest, but what I sing (because my father sings it every time it hails. And I mean every. time.) is grossly inaccurate. More crass, it could be said.

My second favorite story to tell about my friend from NM is about her visiting Oregon(I am about two hours south of PDX) and not bringing socks, and then being surprised when it was pouring rain out the apartment back door and bright and sunny out the front. In spring. I laughed and laughed at her, and to this day still tease her about it.

Livia said...

Voodoo Donuts? Really? IMO, skip the donuts and head to Mio Gelato, Saint Cupcake or Two Tarts.

And as far as comics shops go, I'm surprised no one has mentioned Floating World comics, at NW 4th & Couch. It's got a great mainstream selection as well as tons of artbooks, indie comics and zines, and it regularly hosts art shows and exhibits as part of the First Thursday gallery walk. (And as a lady comics fan, I can state that it not only passes the girl-friendly test, but the store owner is super easy on the eyes. *G*)

Seriously though, if Hardison was a real person, I imagine 90% of his free time would be spent within 100 yards of Floating World; there's Backspace (coffee, wifi, computer repair, LAN parties, live music) Upper Playground (clothes, imported Japanese toys, sneakers), Compound (hoodies, tees, art) and Ground Kontrol (classic arcade games, booze) all clumped around that same intersection. Geek heaven. :)

Also, while you're here in Portland, check out Movie Madness; *literally* the best independent movie rental store in the world. It doesn't just have every movie you could ever possibly want to see, it also has an amazing collection of movie & tv memorabilia. Totally a must-visit.

I am so thrilled to have you guys in town. I see lots of great recommendations already. I won't rehash, but just add that for anyone on the cast or crew who is serious about chocolate you MUST check out Moonstruck Chocolates. There are a total of five locations around town, but my fav is the tiny one downtown @608 SW Alder. And for burger fans, make you you try Burgerville. No atmosphere to speak of, but great burgers made from local ingredients.
And, for what it's worth, that was a crazy weather day, even for the locals.
