The whole "guest edited by J.J. Abrams" thing is a bit much, but I know several of the puzzle contributors and enjoy their work. To each his own, I guess.
P.S. The word "magicology," used in the aforementioned article, was featured today on Word Spy, my favorite blog about neologisms.
CKL's sort of on the same track as I am -- I dug the puzzles, but I didn't find Abrams' writing or tone offered a central theme to hang the rest of the issue off of. You can only rewrite the excellent Mystery Box TED speech so many times, and the essay in WIRED was a pretty inferior variation of it. (Dude, you will not outwrite Wil Wheaton on childhood geek memories. the attempt came across as fauxstalgia) A lot of the rest of the issue read like Star Trek promo porn.
Hence, "genially awful". First issue in a while that simply ate up a quick one-time read-through and then was left in the closest seatback.
John, you're too smart about puzzles, geekery, and storytelling for me to get defensive--I'm just glad you're reading the mag. I'll allow one or two of my hackles to go up regarding your "promo porn" potshot. The only thing in the issue directly related to Trek is the comic, which I'm hopeful gets over the quality bar because of the artist. Unless you mean the overall question of "why JJ, why now?" to which the answer is, at least in part: Dude's got a movie coming out. That's magazine-making for you. But the answer is also (at least in part) that Abrams is working in our space, and his participation in our process allowed us to do some stuff, both in terms of content and visuals, that we wouldn't ordinarily do.
But, you know, glad you liked Jonah's story on Teller and neuro--I edited it (which would count as bragging if I'd actually had done much--that Lehrer kid can write). And whether or not you buy the rest of the feature well as connected to Abrams' notions of how mystery functions within narrative, I still think you'll find some damn fine magazine stories in there. The thing on the Georgia Guidestones is just nuts, for example. And I imagine you were already familiar with the Kryptos sculpture at NSA, but for folks who weren't, I think Steve Levy probably did some mind-blowing there.
Anyway, upon re-reading I detect defensiveness emerging despite my best efforts. My bad. Hope you find the next issue more convincing....
