Torchwood: Children of Earth

I approve. I have a perfectly irrational love for this very broken show. I would say my Gwen Cooper "issue" may officially be a "problem."

  1. Hopefully this won't be another wrist slasher like most of series 2 was, especially when they had to send back the "brave, handsome hero" whose reward for saving us all was to face a firing squad.

! I don't know what it is about Torchwood, but I love it, even if the premise is bonkers and the acting is hammy as a Sunday Picnic in Georgia. I would call it a guilty pleasure but I don't feel guilty about it one bit.

  3. And just to remind everybody; there is a gay kiss in the promo *g*

You should get Eve Myles to do a guest shot - you could always subtitle her ;)

Damn, I have to catch up on this show.

  5. Torchwood is really variable, but it's had some great episodes.

One of my favorites was "Out of Time."

But people got offended 'cause it had sex and stuff.

"They Keep Killing Suzie" was also pretty chilling.

In the 2nd season I liked a lot about the one with Owen dealing with being dead:

The best of the 2nd season may have been the 2nd to the last episode, particularly how brutal the treatment of Toshiko was and how broken Owen was from his wife's death.

  6. Did anyone actually get offended though?

Didn't they just get bored (like me :)

I feel like its padding (no not patting or even petting) - yes yes, get a move on please *g*

Though if they get Morena Baccarin on Leverage and write a make out session with Parker - I am prepare to give this concept a second chance.

    Stellar Dust:

Now you understand why women enjoy that aspect of Torchwood so much ;)

Mind you, I could also absolutely get behind Morena Baccarin guest starring on Leverage and making out with Parker...

::coughs:: Moving right along, my love for Torchwood is strong, despite it's, ah, occasionally schizophrenic writing. But when they're good, they're really quite good.

Excuse me, that's Stellar Drift. Really, I can both read and type. The problem today is that I can't think.

I'm fascinated by how utterly broken 'Torchwood' is. It's a concept that should easily work, and I keep watching it trying to physically will it into working. The actors should be capable of doing the Pulp-job required, but often get far out of their depth.

But compared to the awesomeness of 'Doctor Who', and how well each series flows and episodes contribute to an overall arc, 'Torchwood' just feels directionless and weak, including characters changing their personalities due to the requirements of the script.

Like the recent 'Survivors', i'm filing it in the 'Good concept, disappointing execution' basket.

Even creator Russell T. Davis speaks of it as something he just can't make work. What would you suggest?

  10. If Russell "can't get it to work", it's probably because he's not writing or rewriting nine to eleven episodes each season like he does with Doctor Who.

Or at least, wasn't before the abbreviated season three; with Chibnall gone, I think Russell is the one showrunning Torchwood for the first time. Should be interesting to see what happens.

  11. Well, the series certainly have a director with one of the coolest names: Euros Lyn !

I, too, love the broken thing that is Torchwood. And I don't know why. I just do. OK so maybe it has a lot to to with the gloriously hammy performances of John Barrowman even though he's never as good as he is when he's with the Doctor. Or maybe it never quite feels connected to the Doctor, the way we all wanted it to be. Instead, the best we get is the Doctor's leavings, in the form of Martha popping up, and a lack of an unique vision for the show.

I think it's time for Russell T Davies to make this show his first priority, which I think he may just be doing for the first time, now he's turned the Doctor over to Steven Moffat. Although frankly, the best answer might have been to give Moffat Torchwood - he created Captain Jack, and perhaps it's he who can best weave a group of characters and a cohesive plot around him.

  14. Well, the series certainly have a director with one of the coolest names: Euros Lyn !

Coolest director name ever is Olivier Megaton, the guy who directed "Transporter 3". That's a name that should be fighting the Justice League.

  15. Btw, I see Wil Wheaton said in a twitter update that he'd love to be on Leverage, so I guess that guest shot may come about, eh?

    That sounds cool :)

  16. I adore this show, as broken and dysfunctional as it is. (As one of my LiveJournal icons says, "My fandom don't need no stinkin' Photoshop," and that fact certainly plays a role in my love of the show. My years-long torch for John B - ever since _Putting It Together_ on Broadway - also plays a huge role.)

Sorry, this isn't on topic, but...

Remember the Addams Family. Gomez would kiss Morticia up and down her arm when she spoke French. Can you work that into Leverage somewhere? Like a halloween costume party? How do you think Gina would look in something low cut and vampy? Parker could play the opposite, say an angel. Or maybe a skin tight red devil.

    You gotta dream.

Season 2 was almost entirely painful, but also included my favorite line (of almost any show, ever): “Innovative. Bordering on the avant-garde.”

    Watch it here in context

  19. I like the show overall, but I wish they'd be consistent with their characters. Gwen and Owen had an affair, then they seem to have forgotten about it, then remembered again, then suddenly that one dude was gay. It just feels like the cast changes depending on the needs to the episode.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Everyone in Torchwood swings all possible ways. One of the things I like about it.

Though, yeah, see what you mean about the affair.

  21. Inconsistent characters and acting...and yet I LOVE this show. I wish I could explain it, but I can't.

Even when they're broken and weirdly-paced (as they often are), Torchwood episodes always seem to brush up against fascinating ideas.

...and how can Ib Melchior not be one of the coolest director names? Is it because we've passed his time?

  23. John Barrowman is a lucky sole- if he was a straight guy Evie Miles would be in trouble, lol. Tosh's farewell had me weepy. I <3 this show. Welsh accents are teh sexy- my wife has a thing for Ioan Gryffud
