The only thing I can play is the Ocarina in Legend of Zelda. I got pretty good, busted out some sweet tunes.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was in high school, I played at playing a clarinet. I can play a keyboard (if the notes are written on the keys that is). I know how to read music. Does that count? :)

ReplyDeleteNo I am not making that up. It's called a Kazooka. Its a plastic kazoo with an attached pickup. I also have a small amp for it. Now i'd like to find an effects box, so i can make it sound like things other than a Kazoo. Every so often, i cruise the pawn shops in the area hoping to find a good deal.
I also play a little guitar. But not well. My hands are really too small and my pinky finger is all but useless. I am however thinking that a Ukelele might not be bad purchase.
Also, I sing.
I play a mean guitar... in Rock Band. Not quite the same but I have fun pretending to be the guitar shredder I alas, never will be.

ReplyDeleteBut deep down, there's a dark and evil part of me that has always wanted to play bass guitar, and GIANT CATHEDRAL ORGAN!
I played classical guitar for 10 years, going so far as to study it at university. I struck a problem in my second year when I discoverd the band "My Dying Bride", and realised that doom metal > everything else. So I dropped out halfway through my 3rd year, bought an electric guitar (Jackson Kelly- guitar rule #1: it must look cool), tuned it down to C#, and haven't looked back.

I love playing piano and drums, and will play guitar if the situation calls for it. Fiddle is fun, but I don't have the time to get good at it. Same with flutes.

I used to enjoy making sounds from odd devices. Hacking tape players and waving magnets in front of them. Duct taping guitar pickups to rebar and hitting things with it. Putting a cup of water in a metal bowl and spinning it while tapping it with a Superball.

ReplyDeleteThe instrument I *wished* I played was the 'urhu' because Wife brought me back one from a trip to China and when people see it hanging on the wall they ask 'You can play THAT?' and I sheepishly have to say no.
What I really wish is that she got me that awesome meat cleaver that she got her dad.
I play trumpet. I learnt at school and got as far as not taking my Grade 8, then forgot about it for 5 or 6 years while at University, then joined a soul band. A couple of years later I found myself playing horn and harmonica on a punk band. I am the proud owner of a custom Taylor trumpet - it's all steampunky.
ReplyDeleteI taught myself to play harmonica while I lived in Paris so I could sit on the Metro platform at night and play blues while waiting for the last train.
I also own a stylophone, a berimbau and a zither, none of which I can play convincingly.
i play lots of stuff. strings, mostly, accordian, concertina, pennywhistle rounds out most of my non-string axes.

i have also added in a couple of line6 variaxes into the scheme of things. i can't gush enough of my deep abiding geek love for them. i have, as always done some touch up work on them. heavy duty schaler tuners, stock fender bridges, strat necks. they scream out loud which, to my thinking is exactly what electric guitars are supposed to do.
i use the line6's all the time. the only thing that will get me to bring another type of guitar is if it is one that just is so unique in it's feel and sound that there really isn't an electronic spoof for it. the gibson L5 is one of those. there's just nothing that sounds like that puppy and there isn't a better axe for blues, not ever, not anywhere.
After not playing drums since high school I just got a set of Roland V-Drums so now I can play rock star and not bother the family. Yes, I notice the contradiction in that sentence.

My first real guitar was a Kramer Americana -- built solely for shredding, a volume knob, one humbucker, and a Floyd Rose and that's it, rock out with your c*** out. I also got me a 100W Marshall head. Yes, I was *slightly* influenced by Eddie. I sold it about ten years ago and really wish I hadn't.

ReplyDeleteOne of my life goals is to learn how to play a song-- just one song, and not sure which-- on every instrument imaginable. Just so I can walk up to someone: "Oh, you play the trumpet?" and blast something out. "Dude, you're awesome! What else you got?" "Nothin.'"
I'll never get around to it, though. But maybe I'll learn the keytar. One day.
I play bass in a psychedelic blues/jam band of sorts in San Francisco. We play at clubs and bars, and the occasional private party.
ReplyDeleteI also play guitar, but prefer bass. I'm good at disarming and managing drummers, which you know is a highly valuable skill.
My small collection of instruments includes a couple of Fender Jazz basses (my fav being the Geddy Lee reissue), a Stratocaster, a Seagull acoustic and a beautiful vintage Music Man StingRay that is not mine but the owner has me play so it continues to get love.
