Okay, so for whatever reason I had never heard of this movie. But now, within 3 minutes of reading about it here, I am watching it on my 360. That is like 10 kinds of awesome.
William Gibson (and the Boss) were right - we're living in the future.
I got PRIMER for Christmas a couple of years ago. I've watched it five times. I can't for the life of me claim to have it all figured out, but I see something new every time I watch it.
What I mostly like is that there's no omniscient viewpoint. In a Heinlein time travel story, a third person narrative would explain the various paradoxes as they happen, so we would understand the whole back story behind the crazy, sleepless, unshaven fellow who shows up at some point, runs away from our heroes, and lapses into a coma. As it is, we're left to speculate on what could have led to that kind of personal timeline editing. It lends the movie a lot of verisimilitude.
The movie reminds me a lot of Gerrold's classic THE MAN WHO FOLDED HIMSELF, without, y'know, all the handjobs. Which is a distinct improvement all the way around.

My other friend and I who watched it were flummoxed in the best possible way. I've since made other friends watch it when I could. Every time I get a little more insight but I don't know that a state of relative omniscience can really ever be obtained with that movie. Maybe that's the point though - time travel is really f'ed up when you think about it.
