For the Workflow Geeks ...

An article on how we shot Leverage on the Apple Homepage.

Yes, we made 13 prime time episodes of television with stuff you can buy at your local Apple store. Well, not the 34Tb server. And, of course, the Reds. Odds are, however, you will not be shooting 3 cameras for 14 hours a day.

I will say, however, that lacking the Reds you could do a hell of a lot worse than the Sony XDCAM EX1. There are a quite a few shots in the series shot on this camera, and odds are you'll never notice the difference. They're harder to get now that the EX3 is out (it takes digi-primes) but they're gems.

  1. If only I didn't hate Sony's evil guts, they do make a nice camera. I'll stick with my Canon XH-A1, a very capable prosumer machine. For the budget minded I can't praise the Canon HV20 and HV30 enough. Those little cameras deliver in a big way, stunning HD pictures, excellent low light performance, easy to use and lots of fun. I shot with my HV20 in the crypt beneath Glasgow Cathedral and in the lower light level the sensor delivered a gorgeous cine noir type grain that I would have futzed with endlessly to have achieved in post. In better light the image is as crisp as crisp can be.

  2. Wow. I didn't know all this was done on HD video -- and the Red too!

Do you add filmlooking to it, or is HD video now comparable to film in contrast?

For the Apple Color stage, was it necessary to break the sequence up by acts? I've heard lots of people complain about Color with sequences with >200 shots or >20 minutes, but I haven't had the experience myself.

I'm also curious about which red workflow was used. It sounds like everything was converted to prores off the bat.

  4. How was your experience with the RED cameras? I'm kind of curious about them. (in a totally geek sort of way.)

Just saw the first episode. You did good work. I liked it enough to plan to watch TV for the first time in years to see the next installment. It's amazing to have followed your progress, then actually see the fruits of your labor. Anyway, it was a lot of fun to watch.

    Damn Television and it's schedule-y-ness.

I don't want to wait for Tuesday until the next episode--I want it now!

Could you expand on the vfx software and pipeline? What was the multi-TB storage?

I'm a little gun-shy about leaving compliments here after we broke Friedman's blog, but the show's a lot of fun, so yay John Rogers.

And since I'd sit through any piece of crap as long as those two actresses were in it, the lack of crappiness is a real plus.

  12. What an amazing effing show!! I really thought I had the ending nailed down then BAM! You totally switched it up, which I appreciate. I like guessing the ends of shows but when I get it wrong makes me want to watch a whole lot more. Great work! Can't wait for to see what the season will unfold.

  13. Kinda shacky at the beginning there. You need to sit down with your writing staff and remind them of their lactose intolerant viewers. That first episode had a LOT of cheese.

But the premise was fun, the show was well-paced, and the characters have plenty of room to grow on you. And the camera work was fantastic. Big points.

This is definitely going in my DVR queue.

I know this is sorta random, but I understand you're the creater of Jackie Chan Adventures, hopefully you see this. It probably won't make a difference what I say, but most people love this cartoon and would love if you reconsidered making a season 6 or continuing the series from season 5..I have no idea why it was cancelled and as this was my favorite cartoon growing up and a lot of other kids...I just rewatched all 5 seasons and felt it got dropped way too early..it was SUCH a great cartoon. =(

First Leverage was great, congrats. I've been talking it up to friends, hope the audience share was worthy.
Running the show with no commercials, also great; how can we get your sponsors to keep that up?

Everybody did in deed love it -- it was the first American made cartoon to at the time break the chokehold of the whole Pokemon generation of animation on Sat. mornings.

Sadly, Sony's not really in the animated series business anymore, and 100 episodes of pretty decent half hours is already a solid record. That, and the writing staff's gone off to greener pastures. But we appreciate the support, and we'd love to do a decent dvd release soon.

  17. I watched Leverage last night with my family - which in itself should be taken as a plus, since it was the tall guy and the boy who remembered (saw?) Leverage was showing and turned it on without any prompting from me.

Both the show selection and their opinion of Leverage was almost certainly not (much) influenced by me, as I'm pretty sure what they hear when I talk about you, your show, and your blog is blah, blah, blah, Transformers, blah, blah... - if that much even.

Anyway, you'll be pleased to know that long before I registered my opinion, the boy was saying "Cool! This is a great show!" and the tall guy enjoyed it too & he's VERY picky about such things.

Boy was totally hooked by the scam, so the payoff was especially sweet for him. Nicely done. Even the true ending, setting up the next shows, was a nice payoff.

Upshot - we're all impressed and plan to keep watching. Great work!

  21. OK, now that everyone's seen the show, can I bring up the DOH!! Moment?

They walk *into* the building they want to break into? To go to its *roof* to break in?

You of course see the problem with that immediately.

Thank you for the response, John. I appreciate you taking time out of your schedule to actually reply to what I had to say =D. Yes, I understand what you mean, that's the business for you =(. It's just a shame such a good cartoon got dropped like that, just seemed unfinished and so sudden. 5 years with more then a 100 episodes was an amazing run for a good American animated cartoon, and the fact it actually had a storyline that it followed unlike some cartoons now-a-days. I'd love to see a DvD Release, and I look forward to it, hopefully.

  23. What about for the sports geeks? LOVE LOVE LOVE the Adrian Petersen run on the upper right hand monitor around minute eight in "The Home Coming Job."

If your show had sucked, this single moment would have made me a huge fan. Your show does the opposite of suck in that it rocks hard. Which makes me a, er, hugerer fan.

    Go LEVERAGE and go Vikes!
