Chelsea, Not Leno

A few bits of housekeeping:

-- Episodes of Leverage will stream on TNT eventually, and be available for download on both Amazon (which means Tivo purchasing!) and iTunes within days. I believe the premiere's already up on Amazon. No word on Hulu or XBox.

-- Michael Alan Nelson will be joining us as our third team blogger. He's been writing the excellent Fall of Cthulhu series for BOOM!. I'm genuinely a fan of Nelson's work, and the recent trades of his run are well worth picking up. (Love the size of the BOOM! trades, btw). His new book Hexed manages to somehow be Juno meets Hellblazer meets Epic Win. I figured a horror/indie writer is a nice way to round out the team.

--Leno to 10pm? There goes another 40 or so writing jobs. The economics make sense, but if NBC was going to focus so much on talk shows, then I personally would rather see Chelsea Handler take The Late Show than Jimmy Fallon. Break up the White Dude Chorus Line a little, fer chrissake. The Lovely Wife introduced me to Chelsea's show last year, and now I'm hooked. But we both agree -- cut the bangs, Chelsea.

Already pre-purchased the entire season on Amazon. Love having the option of downloading it to my TiVo and/or watching it through Amazon anytime, anywhere.

You should know, however, that the episode Amazon made available for download this morning as "The Homecoming Job" isn't Episode 102. It appears to be a later, unaired episode with Danny Strong in it.

  2. I think the move is totally a screw up on NBC's part, as well as Leno's, although I can understand the network's desire to keep Leno around, under contract, but it's gonna bite them in the ass.

I mean, three hours, straight, of talk shows?

The reason that talk shows do okay in their time slots is because, generally, there is nothing else on at those times, sans cable stuff.

But, move things up an hour, and you have a talk show format versus actual shows, which I think are gonna do better when the viewership flips to other programming during that time.

As for Handler, I think she'd be awesome, but her bit is more edgy than what you usually get on late night, at least on the Networks. It'd be nice, though, for things to finally change up and move forward, but we'll see when that happens.

  3. Re: Leno. That was my thought too. Damnit, damnit, damnit. The last thing spec monkeys need is the elimination of writing jobs. Jeebus. Well, I suppose it could be worse...at least Leno's show is WGA.

Hmm, they appear to be airing in production order rather than series order. I believe the problem's been rectified. But thansk for the heads up

  5. The thing is it shows NBC as unable to adapt at all. And why try and fix the problem when you can just throw the same old thing on there.

So not impressed by this move. Sucks for all the working writers and us spec monkeys. But I keep telling myself we all have to adapt.

I still can believe Google and Microsoft haven't started full on production wings. Waiting for a game company to say screw it, we are doing our own show.

If the first wave internet billionaires can start space companies, how long before the more entertainment minded games and internet millionaires, with their companies profits and set up behind them, start making or funding programs and movies they want to see?

You're quite welcome, sir. Completely in love with the show, by the way.

Now that I've managed to watch the actual "Homecoming Job," I particularly loved the bit of business with Eliot's disarm early on. Quick, brutal, efficient... and almost casual in execution.

It's like you said about the RvD2 video a while back. The little touches like that (and him identifying Kalashnikovs by their sound, which is dead on) often do a much better job of selling him as a professional bad ass than even the extended fight scenes.

While I'm on the subject, Eliot's fighting style reminds me a bit of Krav Maga. Check out this cool little disarm from what seems to be an impossible position.

  7. OK, Rogers, you mentioned Leverage here. I just previewed my, um, recording.

    And -- you HAMBONE!!

Can we expect a cameo from Stephen J. Cannell too? He did one on his own series.

Hmmmm ... former TV producer screwed by new network TV structure. Sounds like a season 2 idea? OK, not, then! Hmmm ... former TV detective star screwed out of royalties by studio bought by a network? OK, not!

Really, in the few minutes I saw, you are really Living The Dream and I'm happy for ya! This is So Great!!

Oh. I agree wholeheartedly about Fallon, but Chelsea Handler ... when she ventures into "Look, I'm risque and offensive!" style humor it gives me migraines.

Yes. Thanks for that. Followed the link and found Dingo online. Wasted the better part of a day reading it in its entirety. Got nothing done. So again, thanks.

Brilliant story. And that dog, ya, just wrong.

  10. Rogers, I just watched it.

I don't think I'll ever be shaking hands with you. You'll wind up having fifteen fingers!

Really, misdirection upon misdirection -- and the final truck unveil was a brilliant homage to the old M.I.!

    Wonderful, wonderful stuff!

Off to pimp it on my blog.

I don't comment often here, but John's comment about XBox fills me with hope. Did you mean Netflix streaming, or just purchase on XBox Marketplace?

Streaming on Hulu is the next best solution from my perspective, but I would REALLY love to see it in my Instant Queue.

...how long before the more entertainment minded games and internet millionaires... start making or funding programs and movies they want to see?

Soon, I hope. It might fail horribly (writing for video games is a pretty distinct art), but it would at least be interesting.

Just watched the Homecoming episode last night - loved it! Media Center got hold of a bad part of my hard drive and boned my recording of the premiere, though, so I'm looking forward to streaming it on TNT.

One minor request - when you have another episode featuring a corrupt senator/congressman, could you please make him look a little bit more like Joe Leiberman? :) I thought the resemblance there was a nice touch. Was that on purpose, or just coincidental?

You make writers everywhere envious. Keep doing that!

I like the idea of Fallon being kept in a late-night ghetto, so I know I'll never have to see that talent-less waste of space.

First, up front - loving Leverage, telling friends, DVRing it but watching it within 3 days to make sure you guys get the credit. :)

I have one nit-pick with "Homecoming". The whole laundering-money-through-the-government bit made sense to me after I thought about it, because any company that just starts spending 9 billion unaccounted for dollars, would be answering questions from the Feds.

But then the ending left me shaking my head. No one's going to wonder where a hospital got two pallets of 20-dollar bills? Especially when they have the injured vet from the Castleman friendly-fire incident, whom TV viewers are now watching admit to stealing 9 billion dollars?

Love the show, and not everything has to make perfect sense. That one just hurt my brain.
