ReplyDeleteI was born and raised in Iowa, too ... I think John August is Iowan as well ... lots o' writers from the Hawkeye state, cuz it's flat and spare and if you don't play ball, there's not a whole hell've a lot else to do there, heh-heh.

Can someone get this made?
Not to sound defensive or anything, but there is a ton of talent in places like Iowa. My high school class, from Pleasant Valley Iowa, includes an MD/PhD who is working on next-gen sequencing of cancer (i.e. me), 3 physicians, an assistant professor of music theory, an assistant professor of English focusing on post modern texts, esp Ishmael Reed, an engineer who designs nuclear subs, and a journalist and author. And those are a) people from my graduation class that b) I have kept up with. John will like this; a kid a couple of years ahead of me is now at CERN. There are smart people everywhere, and every day is an audition.

Well, this sucks for me. Apparently you have to be from Iowa or Minnesota (http://kenlevine.blogspot.com/2008/12/how-to-sell-screenplay-by-drinking-in.html) to be successful in Hollywood, now.
ReplyDeleteI have two friends on the list, Paul Grellong for "Manuscript" (based on his play), which got 15 mentions, and Geoff Litwack & Kat Dennings' script "Your Dreams Suck" (An awkward teen with no self esteem regains his self-confidence after joining a Dance Dance Revolution team.) Bravo to both.
ReplyDeleteI'm really intrigued by "Our Brand Is Crisis" "Nowhere Boy" (the John Lennon script), "The Beautiful & The Damned," and yeah, Many Deaths.
I'm not originally from Iowa, but did my MFA in playwriting at UIowa. Very, very good theatre program.
