Last Dance, Last Chance for Loooove

Better people than I are covering, in more detail, the following:

a) General Wesley Clark talked about how much he honored and appreciated Senator McCain's wartime service, but mentioned that getting shot down and taken POW were not automatic qualifications for being, say, President.

b.) The press, all aswoon over McCain's manliness -- many of whom obsess over this because they're still working out their Boomer man-issues -- claimed that General Clark was somehow "attacking" Senator McCain or even more hallucinegenically "swift-boating" him.

c.) Then, even more trippily, McCain's camp actually hauled out one of the Swift Boat guys to run interference, claiming Clark was somehow distorting or attacking Senator McCain's war record. Which he didn't do, either explicitly or implicitly.

Let's make this perfectly clear. The Swift Boaters claimed Senator John Kerry lied about his war record. General Clark pointed out that serving in the military did not mean you were automatically a genius at international relations or national security. A five year old with a head injury could tell the difference between those two statements. Yet the press scurries about, buzzing like binge-puking sophomore girls over how Wesley totally dissed John at lunch hour and how this is totally THE BIGGEST THING EVUH.

This is what you get when you combine massive insecurity, a desperate need for the approval of authority figures (hellllo pretty much everyone working in entertainment/news), and a culture of people generally unfamiliar with those who serve in the military. My grandfather, who I loved dearly, got his ass shot up in the Batle of the Bulge. If you said that somehow made him more eligible to be President than, well anyone, we both would have laughed ourselves silly. But for many Americans, servicemen and women are fetish dolls upon which we project our insecurities and craving for heroism rather than being, say, very nice brave people who need some goddam medical care and maybe a better GI Bill.

If anything highlights that there's a whole segment of modern men in American society seriously fucked up about their identity, it's this knee-jerk reaction to currying favor with the cool jock who's got the testes-cred they feel they lack.

Please, please, in my adult lifetime, could I have a presidential election where Vietnam isn't an issue? Just one where people's service in a war that ended over thirty damn years ago isn't one of the over-riding psychological factors of the election?

Christ, I can't wait until we have the first Boomer Candidate-free election. Not because I don't like Boomers, but I desperately want to at least argue over some different goddam issues.

Obama was seven in 1968; McCain was 32. Hate to say it, but I think this is the first Boomer Candidate-free election.

Yeah, but McCain was a Veteran of the Great Boomer war. So it doesn't count as Boomer free.
    Also...
Also being a prisoner of war doesn't qualify you to be president any more than getting hit with Gamma Rays makes you a nuclear physicist.
In this case, I stand with the General.

Generational angst is amusing, but 'campaigns that involve the issues' have never existed. Completely imaginary. Never happened, never will happen. Instead, learn to enjoy what we're saddled with. Consider this - Henry Kissinger won a Nobel Peace Prize! Takes the breath away.

  4. It is, definitely. McCain is a member of the Silent Generation (born 1925-1942) and Obama is a GenXer (born 1961-1981). It's interesting because a) America has never had a Silent president, and it was starting to look like it never would, and b) it's really about twenty years too early to realistically anticipate a GenX president.

But both candidates can still be thought of as 'Boomer candidates', even if they aren't Boomers. McCain was in Vietnam, which invests him with all kinds of meaning for the Boom, and Obama was born in the 1961-'64 period, which qualifies him as a Boomer for those who don't use the (fundamentally more sound, I think) Strauss-Howe generational definitions.

  5. You know you're living in a fascinating world when a draft dodging racist Holocaust denier like Pat Buchanan was allowed to go on Morning Joe today and sit in judgment of Clark and Obama while the show's supposedly liberal host (Joe Scarborough was off today so Mika Brzezinski was sitting in the lead chair) kept shaking her head in agreement.

However, Gamma Rays do give you cancer. You know who recently had cancer? McCain '08: There's A Chance He Has Super Powers.

Either way, after the "OMG! KAN I HAZ BER WIT U MR PREDENT!" elections of '00 and '04, if you were hoping for any less of a media man-crush on the favorite candidate of the corporate media empire in 2008, I do appreciate your naivete, but I think you are asking for a wee bit too much.

What has changed between 2000 and 2008 is approval ratings. Obama's have gone up. The GOP in general has gone down. And the media's approval rating - measured in eyeballs and earlobes - has tanked out. Keith Olbermann is gaining on Bill O'Reily not because MSNBC has been racking in viewers, but because O'Reily has been tanking since '05. Cable news is becoming the punchline to the joke that is network provided information.

Funny how the stature of a general in the media depends on whether they support Republican policies and politicians. When General Petraeus came to Capitol Hill to talk about how awesomely the Iraq war is going, any criticism of him was tantamount to blasphemy. Clark makes an obvious and true observation that being war hero does not necessarily make someone presidential material, and the media freaks out.

Remember, the Vietnam War is just an excuse; the elite mass media is supporting the guy whose policy favors those elites.

IIRC, Bob Somerby of The Daily Howler predicted this, back before 2004. His thesis was that the media's misbehavior will be directed any *any* Democratic candidate for president, because the Democratic Party is less for the privileges of the elites than the Republican Party is.

One thing to keep in mind is that Bush is at near-record for disapproval ratings; he's lost everybody in the middle, and is eating into what was the base. His administration has turned into a reign of failure for all but the financial elites. With the recent Wall Street problems, many of those financial elites must be reconsidering. If there truly was an objective MSM, they'd be kicking Bush, his successor McCain and the rest of the GOP like Hells Angels in a bad mood. But they're not.

Yup. The Dochschlosslegende is already taking visible form ("We wuz winnin', until the Evul Librulz betrayed us!!!!").

I fully anticipate seeing in 20 years some frat boy presidential candidate who never came closer to Iraq than the East Coast running as a Manly Man Warrior, with some toadies from an Iraq Vets organization licking his shoes to a glossy shine.

It isn't due to some stupid Strauss/Howe generations thing, but the sort of thing which comes from a dominant power losing a war. It couldn't be from the fault of the elites, so they have to find traitors.

I think it will be even worse than that - feckless scion of some dynasty playing Manly Man against a real, wounded-in-battle, decorated Iraq War veteran.

They'll say he faked his injuries and his medals and spat on troops and...

Oh, wait, we've seen that one before. Which means we'll see it again.

  14. McCain is definitely a Boomer -- Vietnam and the Culture War are the signifiers more than birth date.

And hey, I don't even really believe we'll get an election just about the issues. There will always be chaff. I would just like some new damn chaff.

This is one downside of having an all-volunteer military. When everyone serves it takes the mystique out of it. The man-crush is just guilt for having skipped service.

  24. Oh, it's not the only holdover from the Sixties, trust me. I've been reading Nixonland, it makes my hair stand on end.

Do you know who invented the Potemkin Village TV interview show, used by Bill O'Reilly and Hannity, etc.? Roger Ailes, working for Richard Nixon for his 1968 campaign.

Do you know who first scapegoated "the elites?" as the source of all problems? Richard Nixon and his "silent majority".

Oh, and Richard Nixon changed the presidential press secretary to what it is today, and instituted the first White House communications director.

Of course, it wasn't Richard Nixon who invented the trumped-up excuse for a war, that was Lyndon Johnson.

What we don't have is Chicago police beating people up on the convention floor, though. Or at least, I hope not.

It's not really fair to say that Clark just, "mentioned that getting shot down and taken POW were not automatic qualifications for being, say, President". The interviewer brought that up in the context of McCain's service record and his qualifications for President and Clark replied. In the interview, and in subsequent interviews, Clark seemed content to stick to discussing relevant aspects of McCain's service record.

I agree that does not qualify anyone to be the president of the United States. What about 20 years for senatorial experience? Furthermore, what qualifies Obama to be president? Belonging to a racist church? Having a racist wife? Accepting favors from known criminals? Or is it just being black, and saying what many want to hear? Two years senatorial experience and being a Harvard grad, "Damn Sure Dose Not". Do we really know and trust this guy?

"The Baby Boomers -- whiny, narcissistic, self-indulgent people with a simple philosophy: 'GIMME THAT! IT'S MINE!' These people were given everything -- everything was handed to them and they took it all, took it all -- sex, drugs and rock & roll -- and they stayed loaded for 20 years and had a free ride. But now they're staring down the barrel of middle-age burnout and they don't like it, so they turn self-righteous and they wanna make things hard on younger people. They tell 'em 'abstain from sex, say No to drugs,' and as for the rock & roll, they sold that for television commercials a long time ago...."

Obama is very popular here in Germany. But the medias here don´t tell us about his unpopular attitudes towards gun possession, war in afghanistan or death penalty. Anyway I think 1. he will be a good president 2. you can´t become president of the US when you don´t make this concessions.
