About to Cut Open the Tauntaun

Tyrone: How are you settling in?
John: Good, good. I thought I might get a little depressed, you know post-pilot depression layered on the first real winter. Been shoveling almost every day, and it's been pretty dark pretty early, PLUS of course the strike means I'm a workaholic with no work. But I think I'm holding it together.
Tyrone: What are you doing today?
John: After I talk to you? Nothing. I was about to go to bed when you called. I'm whipped.
Tyrone: ...
Tyrone: You guys are three hours ahead.
John: Yep.
Tyrone: It's four-thirty in the afternoon.
John: ...
John: ... uh-oh.

Let's just say (constant snow) + (no work) + (Mass Effect) = pants optional lifestyle.

Actually, Mass Effect and Tabula Rasa being released at the same time when I'm NOT allowed to work? That's as close as I've come to a Son of Sam-like experience of God trying to tell me something.

I'll finish up the pilot-shoot experience posts this week - I don't think that counts as promotion, it's more educational for the Spec Monkeys, so I don't think I'm in violation of Strike Rules. Also, I can heartily recommend as snowed-in entertainment:

Grimwood's End of the World Blues -- near-future crime thriller tied to far-future mystery. If you've ever wondered where your 2018 AD British expat sniper and timelost cosplay princess vs Tokyo crimelords pulp novel is, wonder no more.

M. John Harrison's Light -- Quantum mechanics, interstellar chase scenes, time travel mysteries, and serial killer mathematicians. And it's not even the plotting. There's a paragraph on every Harrison page that's just such fine writing, it makes me want to quit.

Charles Stross, Glasshouse -- I'll actually go against the grain here (and I know Charles swings by, so apologies) and say that although I dug this, I didn't dig it as much as everyone else did. Once you're into the gag -- and it's an exceedingly fine gag -- the playground suddenly seems smaller. That is, I love Stross when he roams, as in the early chapters of Accelerando. This is all shorthand, I suppose, for "Write the goddam third Eschaton book, Charles."

Ken Levine retells the origin of the famous POV episode of MASH. Note to all young writers: that great idea you have to break format? You are stealing it from MASH. Even BSG steals from MASH. Its okay. Just have a little respect for ht elegacy, that's all.

Oh, and the XBox 360 now handles Divx digital files. Don't say I didn't warn ya when we're all working for the Microsoft network. Do not underestimate the value of a box that's already attached to the fun screen.

That's enough for a warm-up. Thanks for the patience during the downtime.

... And not to complain, but who the hell does a semi-famous geek need to blow to playtest 4th Editon, for chrissake?

Of course, if I find out Wheaton's playtesting and he's been holding out on me, I will be crushed. No pun intended.

Yes, I am lame.
Some of the poeple I know, not so much.

4th Edition D&D.

What does it say about me that I didn't even notice that it wasn't specified?

Anonymous said...

I had to think about what it was the 4th edition of for about three seconds, and I've been playing D&D since '85.

John, I'd be interested in you thoughts about 4th Edition after you've put it through it's paces. Most of I've heard has been from my DM and she got it from people on the WOTC boards. Unfortunately, she doesn't put a lot of trust in most of the people who post there.

That's all me taking the long way around to say that I'd be interested in the POV (heh) of someone from outside my particular "bubble."

OTOH, I expect that it will turn out that you've got a real life and won't think that reviews of D&D are what you started a blog for. Such is life.

I don't have a good feeling about 4th Ed. But then, we've bought nearly every 3rd Ed. (3.5) book that exists, so we're feeling kinda cranky about the whole thing.

Oh dear god, why did you have to go with the pants optional thing? Fuck, maybe I can cut out that part of my brain.

Harrison's Light?

Meh. Nothing. I will accept your judgment of Harrison's ability to put a fine paragraph on the page, but overall, no. The sfnal bits, from the spaceships to the aliens, ran the gamut from vague to farcical. I never felt the least emotional connection with any of the characters. The China Meiville blurb on the cover got me to pick this book up, and I read the whole thing, but was basically pissed off with it by the time I finished.

For what it's worth, my reaction to Glasshouse isn't too different from yours. Good novel, not great. But if you're going to gripe about the "small playground", jump back to Light and count how many characters actually appear with names and faces in the multiple-world-spanning far future sections.

Given the choice though would you prefer to play test 4th Ed or the new Doctor Who game?

John Seavey said...

I don't have a ton of faith in 4th Ed, but then again, 3 and 3.5 didn't do a lot for me either. They both feel like they'd make great computer games, where you'd have a machine to keep track of the book-keeping, but for a GM (or for a writer--I've done some work for about six or seven D&D books, and the statting was always hell), it's a pain in the buttocks. And because it's such a precise system, you can't fudge anything just for the sake of dramatic necessity (again, especially as a writer) without hearing six kinds of hell from rules lawyers.

Give me 'Feng Shui' any day.

You'd love my best friend the inimitable Henri (it's actually Henry but that sounds sooooo much better) ... he's between contracts in the midst of this rather insane early Ottawa winter. He calls regularly at work to have my assistant enter my office and announce that he is P&P.

Which is pantsless and prone ...

Oh and by the way, nice Empire Strikes Back homage in the title ... Ooops, my inner geek is showing.

From what we've seen so far, it looks like Fourth Edition will be tabletop WoW. Not clear if that's really the case or just how they're spinning it.

I thought Third Edition was great, BTW. Some problems, but it's just so much a better game. I'll miss hell out of even if 4e /is/ better.

I really want to like Charlie Stross' writing because I think he has great ideas but his prose has all the heart and soul of computer hardware specs. Inevitably, I'll start reading a story of his only to stumble over a giant block of technobabble that just makes my eyes glaze over.

I understand that it's a juggling act between story and tech and if the tech isn't just so, then the nerds among us will throw a fit because you didn't explain how the hero overcame Special Relativity or neural signal degradation or why the nanotubes need to be shielded but really, story must take precedent.

If you get a copy of 4E, you can expect me to do my level best to exploit my multiple 2nd-degree connections with you to steal a look... just FYI... :-P

But I'm actually expecting not to like it. The more I hear about it, the more it sounds like they're changing the game in ways I'm not happy with... Returning it to a more combat- and mini-oriented focus, introducing tieflings as a core race... Arg. :-( I'll pick it up, of course, but I may end up being one of those people who gets left behind and refuses to play 4E.

rpg.net has ap retty good run down of public and semi-public intel on 4th ed.

Looks like they are trying to address a number issues, the christmass tree effect (CTE), the 'wow, i've shot my one magic missle, you guys handle the rest of the combat' issue, and the fact that if you do any customization at all you will basically spend more time than writing an RPGA mod on each session w/out flagrently abandoning all hope of rules.

And forget it if you happen to run a pc-race centric game, because then my freind, you are fucked.

anyway, 4th ed actually looks like the NWoD, they've learned some things, played some other people's games and come up with ideas that make the system less.....mathimatically rigerous (the base game should have a BANF guide type|subtype etc. to all the underlying things that change and impact the 'monster' every time you change one minor stat)

Instead it'll be x level gets x amount of nifty.

which also removes the 'wow newb, you just crippled your character from now 'till lvl 20 by taking that one feat, and your'e only level 2' effect.

Anonymous said...

I've only experienced 3.5. But our DM would revive some of his old characters from previous editions.

They were pretty much far cooler than the party. And that makes me want to play old school someday.

I'm pretty excited about 40K in the New Years.

Chris said...

Halting State by Stross is very, very good -- a lot like a heist novel set in the world that will become Accelerando, with plenty of gamer porn and spy-fi thrown in for good measure. Since you've got the time, you should pick it up.

And I couldn't even get past the first 50 pages of Glasshouse, actually. It's my failing, I know, but whenever someone steps onto the holodeck, my interest plummets.

Beyond that, you are one of my favorite blogs that does not feature pictures of naked men. Throw some beefcake on here and I'm your number one fan.

ER did an episode a few years ago that was mostly told from the point of view of a stroke patient. She talked continuously in a frantic, rambling monologue while the doctors and nurses examined her, operated on her and appeared to ignore everything she was saying, but when the point of view shifted to the medical staff her voice turned into an incomprehensible mumbling. (The stroke was, of course, affecting her ability to speak.)

In no particular order:

LIGHT/ -- I tend to read sci fi for a particular flavor, and I'll admit Harrison's style is an odd bird. But it succeeded where a lot of sci fi does not for me -- I wanted to know what happens next.

And although the cast is small, the ideas roam, which is more what I meant when discussing GLASSHOUSE. If I wanted massive casts, I'd go back to reading Peter Hamilton. (which I should anyway, but, you know) I am beginning to glean, though, that my taste in scifi runs much more to pulpy hard-boiled-ness and action that happens to be set in the future, hence my fondness for Morgan and Asher, and why I dug the Grimwood book even though I could see as I was reading it why others would not go for it. YMMV.

PAMB - no cheating with the personal knowledge!

JAUNTYJOHN -- I am not allowed to play City of Heroes anymore. Seriously. I play these other games because at some point my ocd burns out and I can wander away from them and go back to writing for a living. CoH is the well in THE RING and I am Samara.

4th Ed -- From what little I've seen, I don't think it's tabletop WOW, but more streamlining based on, as mentioned, some really spiffy new game design that's evolved over the last few years. The fact that some of that design's been achieved in online gaming shouldn't disqualify the ideas from being ganked into tabletop.

For example, the idea of rethinking how classes work. Everybody's up in arms over the "striker, controller" jobs that the classes fit into, but to me that's actually quite sublime (and TOTALLY lifted from CoH, btw). The mechanics of the game are basically there for conflict resolution -- so why shouldn't they be designed around the way that conflict is primarily resolved mechanically -- that is, combat. That way you're free to RP whatever the heck you want in the non-combat portion, and still be sure that when the dice hit the table you will all be having roughly the same amount of action-y fun. Because, yeah, we've all seen the evolution in a campaign where only those characters who really specialize in being combat monsters get more and more and more dominant during the scrums, to the point of exclusion.

In particular, vancian magic being gone -- weee.

Christmas tree effect with magic items was always there to handle the fact that all the nifty abilities didn't scale equally. If you can now play a viable character past 10th level without tossing on tons of items, absolutely in favor of that.

Having read the SAGA rules, I like almost all the skill and combat mechanics simplifications they did. if that's the test case for 4th Edition, it'll be a cleaner, more internally consistent game that'll help us beat the "20 minutes of fun crammed into four hours" issue.

To address the comment about kludging -- yeah, 3rd Edition was a pain to stat, but primarily because you had all the skill messes and also you had to balance the item christmas tree. The underlying d20 mechanic, though, is really elegant (although I prefer 2d10, but that's me) and eminently easy to fudge once you have a feel for it. Take a look at my favorite variant, True20 or Mutants and Masterminds -- or SAGA, now that I think of it -- to see how easy it is to whip up characters of ALL genres if you're not lugging the sacred cows of D&D around with you.

Annnnd the geekiest comment in KFM history is now done.

Urrgggg... I should not have come back here to cheerily report the NYPL has Light awaiting my pickup.

Because I saw the two negs for it.

Ah, well. If it doesn't grab me, I'll abandon it quickly.

BTW, WGA people might be interested in this post. Not specifically for WGA, but the message...

Happy Holidays and a great New Year to all (well, except to The Suits).

Brave heart, mike cane. I enjoyed Light (though it took a while), and I'm just another random Internet schmoe.

But if you're going to gripe about the "small playground", jump back to Light and count how many characters actually appear with names and faces in the multiple-world-spanning far future sections.

Um, one would also have to take into account that this was much of the point.

And Glasshouse left me a bit cool, too, unlike, say, 80-90% of Accelerando. I actually thought part of the problem was that there wasn't enough technobabble: the outside world recovering from the war was much more engaging to me than the world inside. Where deployment of futuretech ubiquitous surveillance would have been both logical and plot-destroying. I'm much more optimistic about Halting State.

Hey, are you guys saying it's too late to upgrade to 2nd Edition?

I can't talk about the 4e playtest in any detail (NDA, etc), but it certainly runs better than any game of 3/3.5 I played in. Granted, I'm an old-school grognard (hell, I wrote a pile of 2nd Ed stuff, so I think I've got some license), and there are certain design choices I would have avoided, but... I think the game will be better than the general online expectation suggests.

Yeah, it's a pain in the ass that they're releasing the books so soon after 3/3.5 came out. Yeah, it sucks that they're continuing the drive toward a more toy/mini-driven combat system, but given their parent company, not such a surprise.

Also, if you seriously want to get in on some 4e playtesting, let me know. I know some people. I also happen to know that some of those people know you, know your work, and have in fact commented on your work in their blogs.

Thanks, Colin, but those nice people actually contacted me. You will note Wil Wheaton is out auctioning his celebrity for fundraisers, while I am leveraging mine for gaming access. That is why he is a better man than I am.
