For the Geeks Only

I am not sure, but I think the combination of Galactica hot-dropping into the atmosphere with last two episodes of Heroes, is as close to Geek Nirvana as we're likely to get until the Venture Brothers/Angel/Captain Scarlet crossover miniseries.

I do have to say that the scene with Galactica dropping through atmo, launching Vipers all the way down... and the last-second jump... that blew my mind.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to catch any episodes of Heroes besides one about two weeks or so ago. I'll have to wait for the DVDs.

I had a Heroes catch-up session on Saturday, right after watching Friday night's Galactica. My face hurt from grinning by the end of the day.

Anonymous said...

I'm still lukewarm about Heroes, but that Galactica was purest refined sci-fi awesome, injected straight into my brain. So far I've resisted rewatching it, for fear of the overdose putting me into a coma and making me miss the next episode.

The hot-dropping scene in BSG was pure, unadultered awesomeness.

That and the sequence where the Galactica is getting the shit pounded out of it by the Cylons, makes for the best space combat scene I've seen in, I don't know how long.

But I have yet to watch Heroes this week...

I'm right there with everyone. Galactica dropping through the atmosphere was quite possibly the coolest moment I ever saw on TV. I woke up my kids I was yelling so loud about it.

Then I grounded them for disturbing me during Galactica

I wish HEROES had an ostensible lead who was substantially less annoying. Besides the actor weirdly talking out the corner of his mouth and constantly brushing his hair out of his face, the character itself is just weak.

And Hiro is already grating with that So Sirry AZN thing.

i've been trying to convince my non-geek wife that galactica isn't just for fanboys...but shouting out "holy crap! that ROCKED!" after the galactica hot drop hasn't helped my case one bit.

For the record, I never make a sound while watching good television. I'm as silent as a corpse so as to take it all in and not bother other viewers. Imagine my surprise to find myself jumping up and screaming when Galactica did the atmo drop. And when Pegasus joined the fray (in spite of the predictability). Twice in one night... *sigh* Nerdvana indeed.

Anonymous said...

I'm surprised more people haven't mentioned the Ellen Tigh scene at the start of last week's Galactica - yeah, the atmo scene was sweet, but it's the character moments that make the show as good as it is.

Anonymous said...

The last fighters leaving Pegasus as she burns, and the fighter leaving the "hot-dropped" Galactica through the fire into the atosphere.

Also, when Galactica jumped back out of the atmosphere the fire wooshes in to fill the space she occupied.

Hot damnity damn.

And how about that kick-in-the-gut twist for Starbuck at the end? She's gonna be really messed up now, and weather she likes it or not that Cylon got into her head. Next time she sees him the sparks will be o flying.

"the Venture Brothers/Angel/Captain Scarlet crossover miniseries."

Aww. You found my slashfic.

Unknown said...

I'm surprised more people haven't mentioned the Ellen Tigh scene at the start of last week's Galactica

I realized what was going to happen at the very moment it did -- that little half-second of anticipation/realization needs a word. Yes, the character stuff is sweet. but sometimes you need to kick out the chocks and hit the big spacehsip battle footage. I appreciate it.

I think the best part of the hot-drop was the fact that it wasn't even discussed beforehand. There was Adama's requisite "it's an honor to serve with you" speech, but we had no idea what they were going to do until HOLY SHIT did they just do that?

I'm always worried that Galactica will never be able to top itself, but they do. And it makes me so happy when I'm thinking to myself, "Saul should totally kill his wife because that's what would really happen," and then it happens and I have hope for the future of television.

Anonymous said...

I can't bear watching a Galactica episode more than once. Too damn wrenching. But miss one? Never.

Charlie Kondek said...

LOL! I'm sure I will enjoy Galactica in about three years. I have small children so all my TV watching gets done late at night when they are in bed, on tape or DVD. (If you look at my Caine blog, you know what I mean!) I spend a lot of time going, "Oh, that looks good! I'll see that in, what, two years."

I am waaaaay behind in my TV/movies/comics.

marc bernardin said...

just so we're clear. That wasn't me. My crazy doesn't manifest like that.

nobodez said...

Well, when I was watching the opening, I was like "WTF!" Then, as I watched, I was like "Hot Damn!" Now, after watching it (and digging the clip of the drop that's on YouTube), I think this episode might go down as one of those "Great Geek Moments of Television".

Now, as a forgetful 22 year old, it's hard for me to remember all of them. I know the list includes the interracial kiss on Star Trek, the entire season of Firefly, most of B5, and a few choice episodes of mundane drama, but I'd like to know what y'all think the best "Great Geek Moments of Television" are.

Anonymous said...

I'm looking forward to more heroes, but that Galactica was purest refined sci-fi awesome, injected straight into my brain.

Anonymous said...

Watching the hot drop, I was thinking -- in addition to the obligatory "Holy crap!" -- something like:

"Dang, if they were going by Traveller rules they're about to misjump something awful."

(If that doesn't establish my geek creds, this will.)

Irony:

Over the last few weeks, I've read at least three mainstream paens to Galactica, lauding it for tackling difficult topics like the war in Iraq. Humanity under the thumb of arrogant god-bothering tyrants? Suicide bombers as freedom fighters? How daring!

But just in time for the viewership boost, the setting where these themes were being explored has been evacuated! We're back to humanity fleeing through the desert, so to speak.

Ya, Galactica dropping into the atmosphere is the best TV scene I have seen ever! Thats just Frakking rocked! In fact I posted the clip of it at:

John....

That Angel/Captain Scarlet crossover....

It's called Torchwood.

Once you seen it we can talk - I'll not spoil it for you....

P.S. Someone tell me if this ISN'T the golden age of Sci-fi on TV when is it coming? BSG , Heroes, Dr Who , Torchwood..... I fear this cannot last.

Geoff Thorne said...

Not watching HEROES. Too pat for me.

BSG is the shit.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, I would call it a drastic overstatement to include HEROES in the new "golden age" of sci-fi TV.

Unknown said...

I have only watched the hot drop on You Tube, and it just makes last weekend suck even more. Damn that just stuns me every time:

"Well, this will be different."

As for Heroes, well I don't make it home in time to see it and I am already having them record too much for me to watch it. Maybe I will catch it this summer.

And, I am still loving Dr. Who. Really, weekend TV has become fun again, especially Friday nights. Friday night TV has not been this good, at least for me, since the early days of The X-Files.

Anonymous said...

"Heroes" doesn't do anything for me.

The New Who does a lot for me.

As with the revamped Battlestar Galactica, the folks behind the New Who started with something juvenile and a bit campy, dragged it into a dark limo and sped off into the night. When it showed up again, it was nattily dressed, suave, better spoken, and thoroughly freaked out the crowd who loved it in the old days.

The New Who has some of the darkness and grit of BSG Mk. II, but its moral compass and compassion are plainly visible. But it is definitely for grownups. The Doctor as psychologically shattered refugee? Who after all these decades is starting to realize the, um, full potential of the cuties he's been hauling around? Wow!

Anonymous said...

Captain Scarlet?!!?

Tish, you spoke French!

It's not quite the pinnacle of geekiness, but we are darn close! :)

Geoff Thorne said...

Please. I've been waiting for Captain Scarlet's return since I was 12 years old. Syndicated reruns in my home town.

That's a quarter of a century.

So they'd better get it right.

The Stute Fish said...

ALSO TORCHWOOD.

But yes. Definitely.

GM Doug said...

Redjack,

Have you seen the CGI Captain Scarlet Series from last year ?

Simply outstanding!

Cunningham said...

CAPTAIN SCARLET CGI - brilliant.

Now what would really be nice is to see Chief Tyrol having to deal with the maintenance aftermath of an atmo drop - stress fractures, etc... Just a bit of realism to add to the mix.

Re: GEEK TV - we need a reboot of TOMORROW PEOPLE.

Adam Rakunas said...

Oh, hell and yeah. The Galactica hot dropping and the ensuing ship-to-ship battle was geek righteous. Hey, George Lucas: *that's* how you do capital ship combat!

Unknown said...

Life on Mars -- Jesus, yes. That DCI is a damn fine character. The whole show runs on its casting, and another perfect example of "Never would've got cast on the US"

Anonymous said...

Yep. Lucas must be crying into his jar jar binks pillow after seeing that piece of kick ass cinematic action ON THE SMALL SCREEN. BSG is the best show out there for this and the human drama, complex storylines and morality.

As for Dr Who and Torchwood... they need a kick up the ass! Those shows are for kids, look like they've been written by kids, designed and directed by kids. I know BSG has a bigger budget, but they've got no excuse for the lame writing, see through plot lines and production values. Getting rid of the 'producers' would be a start. It's too gay and obvious. And so is Robin Hood for that matter. My toes curl at the writing, acting and production on that show. Makes Torchwood look like BSG.

Anonymous said...

At least the TORCHWOOD guy seems to be doing better with the whole "looking sorta like Tom Cruise" than, say, Peter Facinelli...

(1) As has been noted, Doctor Who is a kid's show and has been since 1963. In fact it has single-handedly revived Saturday night family viewing in this country. A show that generations from gran to grandkids will sit down in front of.

(2) Russell Davies started as a kid's TV writer. I particularly recommend checking out Dark Season and Children's Ward.

Queer as Folk was an odd show in that it was not just critically acclaimed but a commercial hit here in the UK. The lack of controversy, given the graphicnes of the show, was remarkable. It was just one of those shows that was so good even right-wing rags like The Sun and Daily Mail didn't bother to have a pop at it.

Cunningham said...

RE: LIFE ON MARS - I just wonder who the hell they're going to cast for the David E. Kelley version...

Anonymous said...

I'm too busy still praying they don't remake it.

And awaiting the second UK season to see if they can remain brilliant.

Unknown said...

The US version of LIFE is off the rails as far as I know, so no worries there.

If Dr. Who is a kid show, then I'm twelve, because "The Girl in the Fireplace" is a damn fine piece of work, as was most of this year (the season ender is just bloody wonderful). A startling number of pro writers I know have become big fans of the show, primarily based on some truly nifty pieces of craft they've pulled off. Basically, when Mark Waid and Grant Morrison are happy, I know I'm not alone.

I haven't seen Torchwood yet (hellooooo Bittorrent queue, wakey wakey) but I have heard of the Captain Jack conundrum. Hopefully something they tweak soon.

As for "the gay" -- eh. I don't notice it, and hell, if Davies wanted to spend his political capital and fight to bring the Doctor back, he's allowed to use his own writing voice. Every showrunner has a tone, that's his -- not to mention ,this year with Tennant has been one big love letter to over-the-top hetero romance. Unless there was a section of Girl where Rose and Mme. de Pompadour made out, that I missed.

...

Hmmm, time to check out the extras ...

Charlie Brooker's review of Torchwood is fabulous:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/theguide/tvradio/story/0,,1932038,00.html

I highly recommend Charlie Brooker's TV Screengrab, which is the best piece of criticism on TV. To say he pulls no punches is to put it mildly. Also check out Nathan Barley, the sitcom he wrote with comedy god Chris Morris. It's difficult watching but very, very rewarding.

Anonymous said...

Okay, the link to the Guardian didn't work, so here's a cut and paste of the review.

Charlie Brooker's screen burn

Charlie Brooker
Saturday October 28, 2006
The Guardian

Lots of things designed to be used by children end up appealing to adults too. Harry Potter. Jelly babies. The list is endless.

TV's Doctor Who is a good example. Originally conceived as an educational drama for 1960s kiddywinks, it attracted a devoted adult audience from the very beginning. They knew they were watching something that wasn't, strictly speaking, "for them" but they loved it anyway.

The trouble with Who's freshly-minted anagrammatic "sister" serial Torchwood (Sun, 10pm, BBC3; Wed, 9pm, BBC2) is that it's not really clear who it's aimed at. It contains swearing, blood and sex, yet still somehow feels like a children's programme. Thirteen-year-olds should love it; anyone else is likely to be more than a little confused. Which isn't to say Torchwood is bad. Just bewildering. And very, very silly.

The central presence of Captain Jack Harkness, one of the most pantomime characters ever to appear in Doctor Who, doesn't exactly help. He's like Buzz Lightyear, but less realistic. The moment you see him running around being all larger-than-life, you think "aha - so Torchwood's a camp space opera? Fair enough".

But then the storyline goes all dark and unpleasant and people are getting their throats torn open and shooting themselves in the head, and suddenly you don't know where you are. Not in Kansas anymore, maybe - but where?

Cute and dark, sweet and sour, up and down. It's like tuning in to watch Deadwood, only to discover they've replaced Al Swearengen with the Honey Monster. Or sitting through a "re-imagining" of the Captain Birds Eye commercials, in which the white-haired skipper traverses the oceans in a raging thunderstorm, ruling his child-crew with an iron fist, tossing dissenters overboard into the rolling, foaming waves - but dances the hornpipe with a big cartoon haddock while the credits roll. Or stumbling across an episode of Scooby-Doo in which Shaggy skins up on camera.

In fact Scooby-Doo (more than, say, the X-Files or Buffy) is probably the show most analogous to Torchwood, in that both series revolve around a fresh-faced team of meddling kids tackling an ever-shifting carnival of monsters in a world of childlike simplicity. The Torchwood gang even have their own version of The Mystery Machine, although theirs is a spectacularly ugly SUV with two daft strips of throbbing LED lights either side of the windscreen whose sole purpose is to make the entire vehicle look outrageously silly - they might as well have stuck a big inflatable dick on the bonnet, to be honest.

The inside's not much better - LCD screens embedded in every available flat surface, each urgently displaying a wibbly-wobbly screensaver ... it must be like driving around in a flagship branch of PC World.

There are other glaringly daft touches: the countless overhead helicopter shots of Cardiff (what is this, Google Earth?); the ridiculous severed hand-in-a-jar (straight from the Addams Family); the protracted sequence from episode one in which Captain Jack stood atop a tall building surveying the cityscape like Batman FOR NO REASON WHATSOEVER. Oh, and the team's insistence on using the silly invisible elevator that slowly, slowly ascends through a sort of "magic hole" in the pavement - even though there's a perfectly reasonable BACK DOOR through which they can enter and leave the Batcave at will.

And on top of all that, there's a bizarre emphasis on bisexual tension thrown in for good measure. You half expect the Torchwood gang to drop their slacks and form a humping great daisy chain any moment. It's Shortbus meets Goober and the Ghost Chasers meets X-Men meets Angel meets The Tomorrow People meets Spooks meets Oh God I Give Up.

Still, the act of jotting down some of Torchwood's thundering absurdities has put a big dumb smile on my face. Whatever the hell it's supposed to be, there's nothing else like Torchwood on TV at the moment, and that's got to be worth something. I just don't have a clue how much.

Sorry to keep banging the gong for Charlie Brooker, but in one of his more entertaining shows he travelled to LA and screened, for an audience of ordinary Yanks, some British TV. Not our top-of-the-range stuff you understand, but more of the TV fillers such as the worthless police soap The Bill and the darts-themed quiz show Bullseye. The audience was very entertained by the crapitude of the shows. They couldn't believe the cop reality shows they were shown, where in place of car chases and gunfights the British versions had clueless transport cops dealing with even more clueless train passengers.

Most interesting, though, was when he showed them Eastenders. Now, the show has its fans here in the UK but it has long jumped the shark since it went to more than three days a week. The writing quality has diminished as the quantity of work increased. Nowadays it's pretty much a piece of throwaway trash, but to the American audience it was like an adaptation of fucking Tolstoy. Still, we are told, compared to US daytime soaps it is quality TV...

The BBC run a kid's fan show for 'Doctor Who' titled 'Totally Doctor Who', with lots of behind-the-scenes stuff. They got very excited about 'The Girl in the Fireplace' since they had an interview with the little girl playing the young Mme. Pompadour.

In the latest series, the Absorbaloff monster in the episode 'Love and Monsters' was actually the competition winner in the kid's show 'Blue Peter', where children were invited to invent a monster for Doctor Who. Of course, they got big kid and top TV comic Peter Kay (you guys really have to see 'Phoenix Nights') to play the Absorbaloff.

Anonymous said...

Those shows are for kids, look like they've been written by kids, designed and directed by kids.

Well, get this: it's a family show for kids up to grandparents. A national institution so treasured that the most right-wing papers won't say a word against it (indeed are enthusiastic boosters) that has featured a bisexual action hero and man-on-man kissing with nary a word of controversy.

Cool.

Anonymous said...

You have to admit, there aren't a lot of US shows willing to feature an alien-possessed girl literally fucking a guy into dust (while another guy watches and masturbates).

So TORCHWOOD has THAT going for it, at the very least.

Anonymous said...

I've just watched ep.3 of Torchwood and it's very different from the Scooby-Doo heroics of the first two. Quite sombre and rather grown up, I thought.

Though next week the Cybermen return.

Oh, so there *is* a Torchwood! Thought you guys were kidding!

As usual, Charlie Brooker gets it spot on. What IS Capn Birdseye er I mean Jack DOING stood on top of that building. Looking for the lost plotline or a way off that terrible programme? I suppose that's the writers way of making him look cool and be seen for his character to actually do something, when in fact he does very little in the show.

So it's a family show for kids up to grandparents??? Oh so that makes it okay to write such lame dialogue/scenes and design a car that looks like a disco on 4 wheels? You wouldn't get away with that on the other side of the pond. Are they trying to insult everyone's intelligence at the same time, is that what 'family orientated' means? The writing staff seem more concerned with what gender bending they can crowbar into the plot (I use the term plot in it's loosest sense) instead of actually thinking what would be interesting as a story dynamic. So Torchwood is for adults is it? All the production team seem to think that means is adults = sex. That's it. End of thinking.

The best thing about (the original) Dr Who was the idea that there's this guy leaping through time and only a few people knew about it, he was a mystery. Now we all have to assume that everyone on earth knows about aliens now that the cybermen and the daleks have appeared in everyone's front room. Where is the mystery in that? There's no sublety, it's all in yer face cock waving. Just because it's for kids doesn't mean you can slack off with the plot and everything else. If anything, you have to be more aware of it. And if it was 'for kids' why the hell is it on at 7pm?

While I do think Russell T Davies is a good writer, he's a godawful sci fi writer and producer. They should have got someone in who does know that genre or at least someone who knows how to say NO.

Don't get me started on Robin Hood!
